Energy, stored

Many biochemical reactions are involved in converting and storing energy, and the primary consideration is the chemical potential at which the product is recovered, rather than the yield. Consider the simple reaction... [Pg.2822]

Of all the monosaccharides d (+) glucose is the best known most important and most abundant Its formation from carbon dioxide water and sunlight is the central theme of photosynthesis Carbohydrate formation by photosynthesis is estimated to be on the order of 10 tons per year a source of stored energy utilized directly or indi rectly by all higher forms of life on the planet Glucose was isolated from raisins m 1747 and by hydrolysis of starch m 1811 Its structure was determined in work culmi nating m 1900 by Emil Fischer... [Pg.1032]

Following the invention of the hydrauHc press in 1795 (3), the use of hydrauHcs expanded rapidly during the nineteenth century. The weight-loaded accumulator, invented ca 1850, was used to store energy in hydrauHc systems. The elementary press circuit has several parts that are common to all hydrauHc systems a reservoir, a pump, piping, control valves, a motor, which in this case is a hydrauHc cylinder or ram, and the hydrauHc fluid. By ca 1860 hydrauHc presses were used for forging, and an adjustable-speed hydrauHc transmission was perfected in 1906 (2). The manufacture of hydrauHcahy actuated machines attained industrial importance after 1920. [Pg.261]

Most carbohydrates exist in the form of polysaccharides. Polysaccharides give stmcture to the cell walls of land plants (cellulose), seaweeds, and some microorganisms and store energy (starch in plants and glycogen in animals). They are important in the human diet and in many commercial apphcations. [Pg.473]

The inductance in the d.c. link may cause a reverse voltage spike across the power diodes or thyristors as a residt of the decay of the reverse current (release of its stored energy). A power deviee may be protected against such voltage spikes through tin R-C snubber circuit, as shown in Figure 6.37. (This circuit is discussed later.)... [Pg.129]

Moment of inertia or stored energy constant, applicable to motors of frame sizes above 315 10% of the guaranteed value... [Pg.269]

This defines the focus, i.e, the point of source within the earth s body, from where the stored energy is released. It causes an earthquake and travels outwards in the form of seismic waves to the earth s surface. [Pg.443]
