Diene systems

The parent diene of conjugated diene systems is C=C—C=C. This system in a hexane solvent absorbs at 217 nm. If the conjugated system is increased, the wavelength of the [Pg.348]

Example 5.2 is a little more complicated. The parent diene is at 217 nm. The diene system is within a ring, as in Example 5.1, so we add 36 nm. There is one double bond extension to the system. As you can see, the conjugated system consists of three double bonds rather than two double bonds. This adds [Pg.350]

Examples 5.3 and 5.4 are molecules with very similar formulas, but different structures. The double bonds are in different positions. The wavelength of the absorption maximum for Example 5.3 is 309 nm, which is 54 nm longer than in Example 5.4. The major difference between the two compounds is that the molecule in Example 5.3 has a two double bonds within one ring and a conjugated system of three double bonds, that is, the double bonds are each separated by one single bond. That results in the addition of 36 nm for the diene in a ring and 30 nm for the double bond extension. In Example [Pg.350]

there are three double bonds, but the system is not conjugated. The double bond farthest to the right (on the upper part of the ring containing the two double bonds) is separated by two single bonds from the parent diene and is not part of a conjugated system. [Pg.350]

The Diels-Alder Reaction consists in the direct combination of a compound containing a conjugated diene system u ith a reagent which possesses a double or triple bond activated bj suitable adjacent groups. Examples of such reagents are maleic anhydride, p-benzoquinone, acraldehyde and acetylene dicarboxylic esters. Combination always occurs at the 1,4 positions of the diene system ... [Pg.292]

Compounds containing a double or triple bond, usually activated by additional unsaturation (carbonyl, cyano, nitro, phenyl, etc.) In the ap position, add to the I 4-positions of a conjugated (buta-1 3-diene) system with the formation of a ax-membered ring. The ethylenic or acetylenic compound is known as the dieTwphile and the second reactant as the diene the product is the adduct. The addition is generally termed the Diels-Alder reaction or the diene synthesis. The product in the case of an ethylenic dienophile is a cyctohexene and in that of an acetylenic dienophile is a cyctohexa-1 4-diene. The active unsaturated portion of the dienophile, or that of the diene, or those in both, may be involved in rings the adduct is then polycyclic. [Pg.941]

Tertiary acetylenic halides give unsatisfactory results owing to further isomerization of the allenic halide into a conjugated diene system under the influence of the copper salt. Bromo- and iodoallenes with the structures R R2C=C=CH-X can also be synthesized by an aqueous procedure, consisting of reaction between... [Pg.154]

The intermediate 190 of the intramolecular aminopalladation of an allenic bond with jV-tosylcarbamate undergoes insertion of allylic chloride. Subsequent elimination of PdCl2 occurs to afford the 1,4-diene system 191. The regeneration of Pd(II) species makes the reaction catalytic without using a reoxidant[190]. [Pg.47]

When butadiene is treated with PdCU the l-chloromethyl-7r-allylpalladium complex 336 (X = Cl) is formed by the chloropalladation. In the presence of nucleophiles, the substituted 7r-methallylpalladium complex 336 (X = nucleophile) is formed(296-299]. In this way, the nucleophile can be introduced at the terminal carbon of conjugated diene systems. For example, a methoxy group is introduced at the terminal carbon of 3,7-dimethyl-I,3,6-octatriene to give 337 as expected, whereas myrcene (338) is converted into the tr-allyl complex 339 after the cyclization[288]. [Pg.66]

In the synthesis of morphine, bis-cyclization of the octahydroisoqtiinolinc precursor 171 by the intramolecular Heck reaction proceeds using palladium trifluoroacetate and 1,2,2,6,6-pentamethylpiperidine (PMP). The insertion of the diene system forms the rr-allylpalladium intermediate 172, which attacks the phenol intramolecularly to form the benzofuran ring (see Section 1.1.1.3). Based on this method, elegant total syntheses of (-)- and (+ )-dihydrocodei-none and (-)- and ( + )-morphine (173) have been achieved[141]. [Pg.153]

The intramolecular coupling of organostannanes is applied to macrolide synthesis. In the zearalenone synthesis, no cyclization was observed between arylstannane and alkenyl iodide. However, intramolecular coupling take.s place between the alkenylstannane and aryl iodide in 706. A similar cyclization is possible by the reaction of the alkenylstannane 707 with enol triflate[579]. The coupling was applied to the preparation of the bicyclic 1,3-diene system 708[580]. [Pg.233]

The reaction of the allylic acetate with a diene system 784 affords the poly-fused ring system 785 by three repeated alkene insertions[487]. An even more strained molecule of the [5.5.5.5] fenestrane 788 has been constructed by a one-pot reaction in a satisfactory yield by the Pd-catalyzed carbonylation-cycliza-tion of 786 without undergoing elimination of /3-hydrogen in the cr-alkylpalla-dium intermediate 787 owing to unfavorable stereochemistry for syn elimination[488]. [Pg.398]

Depending on the substituents of l,6-enynes, their cyclization leads to 1.2-dialkylidene derivatives (or a 1.3-diene system). For example, cyclization of the 1,6-enyne 50 affords the 1.3-diene system 51[33-35]. Furthermore, the 1.6-enyne 53, which has a terminal alkene, undergoes cyclization with a shift of vinylic hydrogen to generate the 1,3-diene system 54. The carbapenem skeleton 56 has been synthesized based on the cyclization of the functionalized 1,6-enyne 55[36], Similarly, the cyclization of the 1,7-enyne 57 gives a si -mem-bered ring 58 with the 1,3-diene system. [Pg.478]

The 1.3-diene system formed by cydization is useful for further modifications. typically Diels-Alder reactions. The 1,3-diene 51 reacts with maleimide to give 52[35], Similarly, the 1.3-diene 59 undergoes a Diels-Alder reaction, and this sequence was used for the syntheses of sterepolide (60 )[37] and mer-ulidial[38]. [Pg.479]

The major product corresponds to addition of a proton at C 1 and bromide at C 2 This mode of addition is called 1,2 addition, or direct addition The minor product has its proton and bromide at C 1 and C 4 respectively of the original diene system This mode of addition is called 1,4 addition, or conjugate addition The double bond that was... [Pg.405]

The Diels-Alder cycloaddition is one example of a pencyclic reaction, which is a one step reaction that proceeds through a cyclic transition state Bond formation occurs at both ends of the diene system and the Diels-Alder transition state involves a cyclic array of six carbons and six tt electrons The diene must adopt the s cis conformation m the transition state... [Pg.409]

Let us now examine the Diels-Alder cycloaddition from a molecular orbital perspective Chemical experience such as the observation that the substituents that increase the reac tivity of a dienophile tend to be those that attract electrons suggests that electrons flow from the diene to the dienophile during the reaction Thus the orbitals to be considered are the HOMO of the diene and the LUMO of the dienophile As shown m Figure 10 11 for the case of ethylene and 1 3 butadiene the symmetry properties of the HOMO of the diene and the LUMO of the dienophile permit bond formation between the ends of the diene system and the two carbons of the dienophile double bond because the necessary orbitals overlap m phase with each other Cycloaddition of a diene and an alkene is said to be a symmetry allowed reaction... [Pg.414]

Section 10 10 Protonation at the terminal carbon of a conjugated diene system gives an allylic carbocation that can be captured by the halide nucleophile at either of the two sites that share the positive charge Nucleophilic attack at the carbon adjacent to the one that is protonated gives the product of direct addition (1 2 addition) Capture at the other site gives the product of conjugate addition (1 4 addition)... [Pg.417]

Myrcene with its conjugated diene system readily undergoes Diels-Alder reactions with a number of dienophiles. For example, reaction with 3-meth.5i-3-pentene-2-one with a catalytic amount of AlCl gives an intermediate monocyclic ketone, which when cyclized with 85% phosphoric acid produces the bicycHc ketone known as Iso E Super [54464-57-2] (49). The product is useful in providing sandalwood-like and cedarwood-like fragrance ingredients (91). [Pg.417]

Reaction of myrcene and sulfur dioxide under pressure produces myrcene sulfone. This adduct is stable under ordinary temperatures and provides a way to stabilize the conjugated diene system in order to hydrate it with sulfuric acid. The myrcene sulfone hydrate produced is pyrolyzed in the vapor phase in order to regenerate the diene system to produce myrcenol [543-39-5] (50). [Pg.417]

P-Hydroxy steroids which contain the 5,7-diene system and can be activated with uv light to produce vitamin D compounds are called provitamins. The two most important provitamins are ergosterol (1) and 7-dehydrocholesterol (3). They are produced in plants and animals, respectively, and 7-dehydrocholesterol is produced synthetically on a commercial scale. Small amounts of hydroxylated detivatives of the provitamins have been synthesized in efforts to prepare the metaboHtes of vitamin D, but these products do not occur naturally. The provitamins do not possess physiological activities, with the exception that provitamin D is found in the skin of animals and acts as a precursor to vitamin D, and synthetic dihydroxalated... [Pg.126]

In the case of vinylfurans and vinylpyrroles there is the possibility of cycloaddition involving either the cyclic diene system or the diene system including the double bond. 2-Vinylfuran reacts in high yield with maleic anhydride in ether at room temperature to form the adduct involving the exocyclic double bond. Similarly, 2- and 3-vinylpyrroles react with 7T-electron-deficient alkenes and alkynes under relatively mild conditions to give the corresponding tetrahydro- and dihydro-indoles (Scheme 51) (80JOC4515). [Pg.66]

The transition state involves six partially delocalized electrons being transformed from one 1,5-diene system to another. The transition state could range in character from a 1,4-diradical to two nearly independent allyl radicals, depending on whether bond making or bond breaking is more advanced. The general framework for understanding the substituent effects is that the reactions are concerted with a relatively late transition state with well-developed C(l)—C(6) bonds. [Pg.626]

An important application of the allylic bromination-dehydrobromination approach is the formation of the A -diene system e.g. 110) in vitamin D synthesis. Dehydrobromination of the A -7-bromo system in the presence of mercuric chloride gives a high yield of A -diene. ... [Pg.333]

No new pnnciples ate involved in describing the bonding in these complexes and appropriate combinations of ihe 4p ottoilals on the diene system can be used lo construct MOs with the metal-based orbitals for donation and back donation of electron density. As with ethene, two limiting cases can be envisaged wbicb can be represented schematically as in Fig. 19.25. Consistent with... [Pg.935]

When Diels and Alder published their famous paper in 1928, Diels had been working with related reactions for several years [6]. In 1925, Diels reported the reaction of azodicarboxylic ester (Et0C(0)2CN=NCC(0)0Et) with compounds containing a conjugated diene system. He found that addition of the azodicarboxylic ester occurs at the 1,4-position of the conjugated system as with cyclopentadiene and with butadiene. This work probably led to the famous Diels-Alder reaction. In 1927, Diels and his student Alder published a paper on the reaction of azodicarboxylic ester with styrene. [Pg.2]

As in the case of the steroids, introduction of additional nuclear substituents yields morphine analogs of increased potency. The more important of these are derived from one of the minor alkaloids that occur in opium. Thebaine (14), present in crude opium in about one-tenth the amount of morphine, exhibits a reactive internal diene system that is well known to undergo various addition reactions in a 1,4 manner (e.g., bromination). Thus, reaction with hydrogen peroxide in acid may be visualized to afford first the 14-hydroxy-6-hemiketal (15). Hydrolysis yields the isolated unsaturated ketone (16). Catalytic reduction... [Pg.289]

Gratifyingly, when compound 24 is refluxed in a solution of toluene at 110°C, it undergoes quantitative [4+2] cycloaddition to polycyclic system 25. The indicated stereochemistry of 25 was anticipated on the basis of the trans, trans geometry of the phenyl-diene system in precursor 24 and the presumed preference for an exo transition state geometry. These assumptions were vindicated by the eventual conversion of 25 to endiandric acids A (1) and B (2). [Pg.270]

The aldehyde function at C-85 in 25 is unmasked by oxidative hydrolysis of the thioacetal group (I2, NaHCOs) (98 % yield), and the resulting aldehyde 26 is coupled to Z-iodoolefin 10 by a NiCh/CrCH-mediated process to afford a ca. 3 2 mixture of diaste-reoisomeric allylic alcohols 27, epimeric at C-85 (90 % yield). The low stereoselectivity of this coupling reaction is, of course, inconsequential, since the next operation involves oxidation [pyridinium dichromate (PDC)] to the corresponding enone and. olefination with methylene triphenylphosphorane to furnish the desired diene system (70-75% overall yield from dithioacetal 9). Deprotection of the C-77 primary hydroxyl group by mild acid hydrolysis (PPTS, MeOH-ClHhCh), followed by Swem oxidation, then leads to the C77-C115 aldehyde 28 in excellent overall yield. [Pg.724]

Substituted and benzo-annulated oxepins readily undergo addition of bromine across the nonaromatic double bond. Bromination of 3,6-bridged oxepins can occur in two different ways, either as a 1,2-addition164 or as formal 1,4-addition to the diene system of the corresponding benzene oxide to give products i.129 138-140 164... [Pg.45]

When the valence tautomeric mixture of oxepin and benzene oxide is treated with singlet oxygen, the primary product is the 1,4-endoperoxide 3 which has proven to be too labile for isolation.219 Its formation can be rationalized by a 1,4-addition across the diene system of the benzene oxide structure 3 then rearranges to ba s-3,6,9-trioxatetracyclo[6.1.0.02 4.05 ]nonane (transbenzene trioxide, 4). [Pg.48]

Occasionally, addition products of 4//-l,2,4-triazole-3,5-diones or diazenedicarboxylic esters and oxepins have been obtained whose formation can be rationalized by an addition to the 2,4-diene system in the oxepin, e.g. formation of 10.190191 In these cases, the primary adduct usually cannot be isolated, because it undergoes a hetero-Cope rearrangement to a tricyclic or bicyclic structure in which the oxepin oxygen has become part of a carbonyl function.190 191,227... [Pg.49]

Ethyl l//-azepine-l-carboxylate (1) fails to react with simple dienophiles such as maleic anhydride and dimethyl acetylenedicarboxylate, even at 100 C 250 however, with /V-phcnyl-maleimide a [4 + 2] cycloadduct at the C2 — C5 diene system is produced.251... [Pg.187]

Cyclizations of doubly unsaturated diazo compounds containing a thiophene ring within rather than at the end of the diene system to yield thicnodiazepines have also been reported. Thus, thermolysis of the sodium salt 7 gives the l//-thieno[3,2-r/]-2,3-diazepine 9. The intermediate 8 rearranges to the more stable product 9 by a symmetry allowed [1,5] shift of hydrogen.14,1... [Pg.363]
