Emissions of CO in the United States peaked in the late 1960s, but have decreased consistendy since that time as transportation sector emissions significandy decreased. Between 1968 and 1983, CO emissions from new passenger cars were reduced by 96% (see Exhaust CONTUOL, automotive). This has been partially offset by an increase in the number of vehicle-miles traveled annually. Even so, there has been a steady decline in the CO concentrations across the United States and the decline is expected to continue until the late 1990s without the implementation of any additional emissions-reduction measures. In 1989, there were still 41 U.S. urban areas that exceeded the CO NAAQS on one or mote days per year, but the number of exceedances declined by about 80% from 1980 to 1989. In the most common production method, the semibatch process, about 10% of the preemulsified monomer is added to the deionised water in the reactor. In the glass (qv) and ceramic industry (see Ceramics), barite can be used both as a flux, to promote melting at a lower temperature or to increase the production rate, and as an additive to increase the refractive index of glass. The viscosity of barite-containing glass often needs to be raised. Alumina in the form of feldspar is sometimes used. To offset any color produced by iron from the barite addition, more decolorizer may be needed. Typical apphcation of a BUR would be to mop or apply asphalt to a substrate to approximately 1.1 kg/m (23 lbs/100 ft ), or the thickness of a dime.
