Nonionic surfactants degreasers

NPE was previously used extensively as nonionic surfactants and emulsifiers in both the textile and the leather industry but has now been replaced by alternative surfactants in Europe. The main alternatives in the leather industry are linear alcohol ethoxylates with different chain lengths and ethoxylation degrees. These compounds are much easier than NPE degraded to non-toxic compounds. The efficiency of linear alcohol ethoxylates as degreasing agents is comparable to that of NPE. 

Polyglycol Ethers. Polyglycol ethers, produced by the reaction of fatty alcohol with ethylene oxide, constitute the most important class of nonionic surfactants. They possess good wetting properties, produce relatively low foam, and are highly effective at low temperature and low concentration. They are used as textile auxiliaries, in dishwashing liquids, degreasing products, and hquid cleaner formulations.

From the virtual smorgasbord of hydrotropes that are available, products from the cationic (quatemized fatty amine ethoxylates) and amphoteric families can be combined with nonionic surfactants to produce water-based formulations for the cleaning or degreasing of hard surfaces.

In the above cleaning areas, alkyl ether sulfates, which are rather expensive raw materials, are generally combined with other nonionic or anionic surfactants, thereby their contribution to bringing the foaming, degreasing, or viscous properties of products to their expected levels.
