Fluorinated surfactants are used as nonfoaming surfactants in nickel-plating baths to reduce the surface tension and increase the strength of nickel electroplate [100] by eliminating pinholes, cracks, and peeling [100,101]. 

One useful method of aqueous defoaming is to add a nonfoam sta-bihzing surfac tant which is more surface-active than the stabilizing substance in the foam. Thus a foam stabilized with an ionic surfactant can be broken by the addition of a very surface-active but nonstabihzing sihcone oil. The sihcone displaces the foam stabilizer from the interface by virtue of its insolubility. However, it does not stabilize the foam because its foam films have poor elasticity and rupture easily. 

The foaming properties of the nonionic surfactants depend upon the temperature because of their inverse solubility temperature relationship. Above the cloud point they are nonfoamers and some nonionic surfactants may even function as defoamers above their cloud point temperature. Therefore, the nonionic surfactant selected for rinse aid formulations must have a cloud point below the temperature of the rinse water.

The combination of surfactant and solvent properties make SURFADONE LP surfactants excellent in the formulation of high performance cleaners.
