Degrease

CH2CI2. A colourless liquid with a chloroform-like odour b.p. 4I°C. Prepared by heating chloroform with zinc, alcohol and hydrochloric acid manufactured by the direct chlorination of methane. Decomposed by water at 200°C to give methanoic and hydrochloric acids. Largely used as a solvent for polar and non-polar substances, particularly for paint removal (30%), dissolving cellulose acetate and degreasing (10%). It is more stable than carbon tetrachloride or chloroform especially towards moisture or alkali. It is somewhat toxic. U.S. production 1981 280000 tonnes. 

Most of the trichloroethylene produced is used for metal degreasing. Other important uses are in the scouring of wool and as an extractive solvent, e.g. for olive and soya bean oils. Minor uses are as a heat transfer medium, anaesthetic, insecticide and fumigant, paint remover and fire extinguisher.

Equipment should be carefiiUy and completely degreased and passivated with low concentrations of fluorine or the gaseous halogen fluoride before use. Special care should be taken that valves are completely disassembled and each part carefiiUy cleaned.

Metal Preparation. Preparation of the metal surfaces to be bonded usually is required because most metals contain surface imperfections or contaminants that undesirably affect bond properties. The cladding faces usually are surface ground, using an abrasive machine, and then are degreased with a solvent to ensure consistent bond strength (26). In general, a surface finish that is >3.8 fim deep is needed to produce consistent, high quaUty bonds. 

Solvent Gleaning. Solvent cleaning employs the natural solubilizing properties of various nonaqueous solvents or blends of solvents. Either 100% solvents or aqueous emulsions of solvents can be used. AppHcation is typically by immersion, hand appHcation, or via a vapor degreaser machine. 

Finally, nitromethane has been used in large quantities as a stabilizer for 1,1,1-trichloroethane. The use of this degreasing solvent is expected to decHne and disappear under the provisions of the Montreal Protocol (116), which bans ozone-depleting substances, of which this is one. 

Carbon, present in iron or remaining after inadequate degreasing, can form CO or CO2. Carbon particles may occur in the chlorate if graphite anodes were used in the production process. Additionally, barium peroxide contains carbonate as a contaminant. 

Motor Blocks. Automobile and tmck motors prepared to varying degrees of quality constitute a grade of scrap called motor blocks. The higher quality grades are stripped blocks from which most of the steel and nonferrous and nonmetaUic parts are removed and the blocks are broken to cupola size. Degreasing the scrap further improves its quality. 

Vapor Degreasing. In vapor degreasing, the solvent is vaporized and the cold part is suspended in the vapor stream. The solvent condenses on the part, and the hquid dissolves and flushes dirt, grease, and other contaminants off the surface. The part remains in the vapor until it is heated to the... 

Filter Cleaners. Grease and oils from bathers can affect filtration. Degreasers are employed to clean diatomaceous earth (DE) and sand filters. They can be surfactant or enzyme based. 

Other techniques aimed at improving grease recovery (and often attempting also to improve the scouring process itself) have included solvent degreasing of the wool (52,53), solvent extraction of the Hquor or sludge (178), aeration (179,180), and physical and chemical destabilization (175).
