Suggested adhesives include modified acrylics, epoxies, polyesters, resorcinol-formaldehyde, furane, phenol-formaldehyde, polyvinyl formal-phenolic, polyvinyl butyral, nitrile rubber-phenolic, polyisobutylene rubber, polyurethane rubber, reclaimed rubber, melamine-formaldehyde, epoxy-phenolic, and cyanoacrylates. For maximum adhesion primers should be used. Nitrile-phenoUcs give excellent bonds if cured under pressure at temperatures of 149 C. Lower-strength bonds are obtained with most rubber-based adhesives. [Pg.150]

In addition to epoxy-phenolic adhesives three-part epoxy-phenolic-nitrile rubber systems are used in metal-metal edge joints and honeycomb constructions [208], These add toughness not available in most EP systems and improve peel strengths. When used on honeycomb, the NR-P is normally applied to the aluminum skin and the EP to the honeycomb for assembly. Service temperature limitations are those imposed by the NR-P part. [Pg.932]

Block copolymers based on nitrile rubber and on epoxy and phenolic resins and on polystyrene (50-54) have been intensively studied in Russia The generated block copolymers were investigated by turbidimetric and IR methods. Thermomechanical experiments were also run on fractions. As may be seen from Fig 13, fractions which combine the properties of the polymers (Curves 2,3, and 4) were obtained together with fractions characteristic of the raw rubber (Curve 1) and of the resin (Curve 5). The copolymer is soluble in solvents which are typical for both components. Solubility studies on the products showed that for any given ratio of the original components, 15 to 20% of the resin combines with the rubber. The properties of the block copolymer, however, depend on the initial ratio of components nitrile rubber confers elasticity and the phenolic resin processability. [Pg.32]

All of the commercial epoxy adhesives presented in App. B bond well to aluminum and to a wide variety of other materials. Lewis and co-workers (42) developed improved powder coatings with nitrile rubber-modification of an appropriate epoxy base (solid resin admixture) cured with an imidazoline-accelerated modified phenolic type hardener. Model coatings ground to 55 pm particle size, electrostatically applied to metals, cured 10 170°C, gave excellent therraocycling results as well as retained resistance to solvent attack. Flexible circuit boards consist primarily of polyimide-based carriers. The problem of bonding the copper foil on the polyimide carrier has not yet been solved satisfactorily. Due especially to their low bonding strength at elevated temperatures, the production of such materials is very limited. Nevertheless, adhesives for copper-polyimide systems were developed, where one-component epoxy resins (e.g., epoxy-polyester mixtures) and reactive hot melts (e.g., phenolic resin-nitrile rubbers) reached importance. [Pg.870]

In most widely used two-polymer adhesives, the thermosetting component is phenolic. Phenolic resins are generally compatible, although not easily miscible, with a number of thermoplastic polymers. Particularly good compatibility is demonstrated between conventional alcohol-soluble phenolic resins and polyvinyl esters and acetals. Epoxies are important in two polymer adhesive systems.
