The Food Alliance has both fixed standards, which specifically prohibit the use of feed additives or subtherapeutic antibiotics, growth hormones, and genetically modified stock, and scored standards, which focus on more particular practices such as feed production, pasture management, manure management, and animal pest management. The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) has also setup operational standards called the Humane Husbandry Criteria that farmers who produce meat for companies such as Niman Ranch voluntarily implement in order to receive the AWI certification.

Serum enzyme (AST, ALT, LDH, AP) and bilirubin levels were within normal limits in 16 workers exposed to PCBs (type not reported) primarily via dermal contact with used transformer oil containing 600,000 ppm PCBs or secondary contact with contaminated clothes or shoes (Brandt-Rauf and Niman 1988). No correlation between serum triglyceride levels and serum PCB levels was found. Physical examinations showed no dermal or other abnormalities consistent with PCB exposure, but it is not specifically mentioned if the examinations looked for liver enlargement. Serum PCB concentrations in the study group were low (generally <10 ppb) in comparison to other occupational studies. 

Six of 16 workers engaged in cleaning oil from old transformers showed abnormal banding pattern for fes oncogene-related proteins all of the 6 were smokers (Brandt-Rauf and Niman 1988). Since none of the nonsmoking workers (six) showed this pattern, the role of PCBs, if any, in the induction of genetic abnormalities described in this study cannot be ascertained. A control unexposed group was not included in this study.

In effect, a substantial decrease in H2 consumption and a poor resolution of the TPR peaks are the most remarkable aspects in the modification of the solids behavior with respect to their reducibility (Figs. 3.c and 4.c and d and Table 3). In the case of IP4 which contains no La or Zr, a 50% decrease in H2 consumption of the first peak was verified, while the decrease of the second peak was dramatic (Table 3. See first and second line on the ninth column). The incorporation of La and Zr affects even more pointedly the reducibility of Ce04 (Table 3, third and fourth lines, eighth and ninth columns) which is in agreement with what was reported by Niman et al. [8]. Comparable results were obtained when Ce(N03)4 (and not Ce02) was employed for the incorporation of Ce to the washcoat. (Table 3).
