Food Alliance

The Food Alliance has both fixed standards, which specifically prohibit the use of feed additives or subtherapeutic antibiotics, growth hormones, and genetically modified stock, and scored standards, which focus on more particular practices such as feed production, pasture management, manure management, and animal pest management. The Animal Welfare Institute (AWI) has also setup operational standards called the Humane Husbandry Criteria that farmers who produce meat for companies such as Niman Ranch voluntarily implement in order to receive the AWI certification. 

We expect to develop, in the future, further analysis of agri-food alliances, in beef specifically, seeking to enlarge the research base and to reduce the limitations of these two case research studies. It also seems necessary to develop a framework to consider the impact of local regulation, consumer habits and culture to the formation and development of the vertical alliance. Nevertheless, we consider the results quite illustrative of the beef chain alliances reality in general.

When EUREP held its annual conference in 2003, they used the opportunity to document the growth of the organization. In the four years from 1999, when the EurepGAP protocols were released, 12,000 growers had signed up to produce under the new system.
