EPA has developed standards for lead paint hazards, lead in dust, and lead in soil. To educate parents, homeowners, and tenants about lead hazards, lead poisoning prevention in the home, and the lead abatement process, EPA has published several general information pamphlets. Copies of these pamphlets can be obtained from the National Lead Information Center or from various Internet sites, including http //www.epa.gov/opptintr/lead. [Pg.31]

Lead in soil can be a hazard when children play in bare soil or when people bring soil into the house on their shoes. The National Lead Information Center (NLIC) is a good resource for finding out how to test soil for lead. [Pg.7]

It s wise to have qualified professionals do the work if lead risks must be addressed. There are standards in place for certifying lead-based paint professionals to ensure the work is done safely, reliably, and effectively. The National Lead Information Center (NLIC) compiles a list of contacts by area. [Pg.8]

To learn more about the requirements and how to obtain copies of the pamphlet contact the National Lead Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD (5323) or visit EPA s website at www.epa.gov/lead. Some of the other tools you need are listed in Box 3.1. Personal protective equipment needed is shown in Box 3.2. [Pg.33]

One commenter asked about the availability of the cleaning verification card, specifically, who would produce them, where would they be available, and how often do they need to be replaced. EPA intends to produce the cleaning verification cards and to make them available at accredited renovator training courses and on request from the National Lead Information Center. Several commenters argued that a third party should perform cleaning verification (or visual inspection, in the case of exterior jobs) rather than the certified renovator. [Pg.218]

For the hearing impaired, call the Federal Information Relay Service at 1-800-877-8339 and ask for the National Lead Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD. [Pg.13]

Some cities, states, and tribes have their own rules for lead-based paint activities. Check with your local agency to see which laws apply to you. Most agencies can also provide information on finding a lead abatement firm in your area, and on possible sources of financial aid for reducing lead hazards. Receive up-to-date address and phone information for your local contacts on the Internet at www.epa.gov/lead or contact the National Lead Information Center at 1-800-424-LEAD. [Pg.13]

Analysis of seismicity in the Global CMT Project is divided into calendar months. The analysis is initiated 2-3 months after real time and is completed before the end of 4 months. Earthquakes that have the potential to yield robust CMT results are selected for analysis, primarily from the hypocenter catalog of the National Earthquake Information Center (NEIC) of the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The current objective is to attempt analysis for all earthquakes M-w > 5.0. Because of the large uncertainties in traditional magnitudes, all events with mb or Ms > 4.8 are selected for analysis. This typically leads to a monthly list of 300 candidate earthquakes, of which more than half are successfully analyzed. [Pg.1366]

The Navy should also take responsibility for transmitting information to larger national and, if developed, international data collection and analysis centers. In the United States, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is taking the lead for homeland security in this area, and it would be a logical referral site for analysis and further consultative help. As noted above, commercial cruise lines are mandated to report to the CDC when an incidence rate reaches 2 percent of the presumed at-risk population. Thus, the CDC would become the ultimate national registry of suspicious medical data for both the civilian and military communities. [Pg.130]

The National Library of Medicine is another principal unit of the NIH. The 10-story Lister Hill Center houses the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications and the National Center for Biotechnology Information. Both are components of the National Library of Medicine. The Library produces and publishes Index Medicus, a comprehensive monthly listing of articles appearing in the world s leading medical journals. The Library also operates a computerized Index Medicus, known as MEDLINE (PubMed), and has pioneered the introduction of large medical bibliographic databases. [Pg.578]

What are the known acute toxic effects of the product based on human exposures Initially, one might say that such information usually does not exist since our society does not condone human experimentation involving products other than drugs. Conversely, it could be argued that such information could be obtained from unplanned human exposures but that these would only occur after the product had been placed on the market. Thus, the information would not be available to the label writer at the time that it was needed. While the former statement is usually true the latter is usually not. It is the unusual product that does not have several close relatives if not a twin already in the market place. Thus, such human exposure information probably exists. One source of such information is the National Poison Center Network whose resources will be described later in this chapter. Obviously, such exposure information is undeniably superior to all others since humans form the principal audience that is to be addressed by the first aid statements. Manufacturers should make every effort to obtain such information. As previously mentioned, the sole dependency on animal studies may lead to erroneous conclusions. [Pg.130]
