The authors thank Y. Oono and M. Balsera for invaluable contributions to the joint development of SMD and J. Gullingsrud for many suggestions in the preparation of the manuscript. Images of molecular systems were produced with the program VMD (Humphrey et al., 1996). This work was supported by grants from the National Institute of Health (PHS 5 P41 RR05969-04), the National Science Foundation (BIR-9318159, BIR 94-23827 (EQ)), and the Roy J. Carver Charitable Trust. [Pg.60]

The primary developers of NAMD 1 were M. Nelson, W. Humphrey, A. Gursoy, A. Dalke and R. Brunner. The primary developers of NAMD 2 were J. Phillips, A. Shinozaki, R. Brunner, N. Krawetz, M. Bhandarkar and A. Gursoy. NAMD development was performed at the National Institutes of Health Resource for Concurrent Biological Computing under the supervision of principal investigators L.V. Kale, R. Skeel, and K. Schulten. This work was... [Pg.480]

In 1964 Douglas Cart Engelbart (Stanford Research Institute in California) developed the mouse as an input device and Bill Enghsh built its prototype from a carved block of wood with a single red button. Shortly thereafter, the mouse was used at the Lister Hill Center of the National Institutes of Health for the input of chemical structures. [Pg.44]

Magnesium vanadates, as vanadium compounds in general, are known irritants of the respiratory tract and conjunctiva. The threshold limit value (TLV) for vanadium compounds in air recommended by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health is 0.05 mg/m based on a typical 8-h workday and 40-h workweek (7,147). Chronic inhalation can lead to lung diseases such as bronchitis, bronchopneumonia, and lobar pneumonia. These dust-related effects can be avoided by use of individual respirators in areas where exposure is likely. [Pg.360]

The identification of pollution prevention options has become a maintenance requirement. In addition to these requirements, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) performed its first investigation of indoor air quahty. The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has also begun to research air quahty. [Pg.444]

High performance Hquid chromatography (hplc) may be used to determine nitroparaffins by utilizing a standard uv detector at 254 nm. This method is particularly appHcable to small amounts of nitroparaffins present, eg, in nitro alcohols (qv), which caimot be analyzed easily by gas chromatography. Suitable methods for monitoring and deterrnination of airborne nitromethane, nitroethane, and 2-nitropropane have been pubUshed by the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) (97). Ordinary sorbant tubes containing charcoal are unsatisfactory, because the nitroparaffins decompose on it unless the tubes are held in dry ice and analyzed as soon after collection as possible. [Pg.103]

Phenol fumes are irritating to the eyes, nose, and skin. According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), exposure to phenol should be controUed so that no employees are exposed to phenol concentrations >20 mg/m, which is a time-weighted average concentration for up to a 10-h work day, 40-h work week. Phenol is very toxic to fish and has a nearly unique property of tainting the taste of fish if present in marine... [Pg.290]

A more recent OSHA development has been the availabihty of personnel from OSHA and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) for consultation to identify, evaluate, and correct workplace ha2ards (20). [Pg.92]
