The authors acknowledge the help and advice of Ms. Chizuko Sugizaki and Ms. Noriko Hayashi, and the advice and support from Professor Atsuo Urisu, Dr. Reiko Teshima, Dr. Reiko Adachi, and the staff of Division of Novel Foods and Immunocheinistry, National Institute of Health Sciences. This study was supported by Health and Labor Science Research Grants for Research from the Ministry of Health, Labor, and Welfare of Japan. [Pg.169]

Affiliated with the MHLW is the National Institute of Health Sciences and Academia, which carries out research and testing on drugs, vaccines, and biologicals. [Pg.475]

In 1997, the Ministry of Health and Welfare extensively reformed the drug evaluation system and established the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Evaluation Center affiliated with the National Institute of Health Sciences. Under the new system, the Center, through its specialized teams, conducts the evaluation of drugs for which different pharmaceutical companies have sought approval. [Pg.752]

Additionally, the Agricultural Health Study, a government-sponsored study conducted by the National Institute of Health, the National Cancer Institute, the National Institute of Health Science, and the USEPA, has found no association between cancer incidence and atrazine exposure (Alavanja et al., 2003 Rusiecki et al., 2004 Engel et al., 2005). [Pg.42]

Accepting this statement and sensational reports by the mass media, the Japan Environmental Protection Agency (JEPA) published Strategic Programs on Environmental Endocrine Disruptors in 1998 (SPEED 98) , presented JEPA s basic policy on this subject, initiated concrete countermeasures and listed about 70 substances, including SDs and STs, that are suspected of being endocrine disrupters (EDs) in a review of the literature [3]. Thereafter, researchers affiliated with the National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) investigated certain kinds of containers made of PS, and it was clarified that... [Pg.727]

Further description of alternative models and their evaluation and validation is given by Blain et al. Validation exercises are taking place at the American National Institute of Environmental Health (NIEH), the International Life Science Institute/Health and Environmental Sciences Institute(ILSI/HESI), the Japanese Central Institute for Experimental Animals/ National Institute of Health Sciences (CIEA/NIHS), and the Dutch Public Institute for Safety and Environment (RIVM). [Pg.441]

In accordance with the revision of the PAL in 1996, the decision was made to reorganize the MHW, Drug Organization and National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS) for intensifying the review cind approved system of drugs and medical devices. [Pg.276]

In preparation for this, in April 2004, the Pharmaceutical and Medical Device Evaluation Center (PMDEC), the Japan Association for the Advancement of Medical Equipment (JAAME) and the Organization for Pharmaceutical Safety and Research (OPSR) were merged and integrated in the National Institute of Health Sciences. The NDA is transmitted to the PMDA which first conducts a reliability and a GLP compliance review. When the data quality is confirmed, specialized team of experts review the NDA data and prepare a list of requests and questions addressed to the applicant. After receiving the answers from the applicant, a review report is prepared. Samples of the active principle might also be requested, for analytical control by the National Institute of Health Sciences. [Pg.503]

The principles of actinometry are well established, but there is no well-established actinometric system sensitive only to UV radiation (Kuhn et al., 1989 Piechocki and Wolters, 1993). Quinine was originally proposed by the Japanese National Institute of Health Sciences and the Japanese Pharmaceutical Manufacturer s Association (Yoshioka et al., 1994). The results of the work of the FDA and U.S. laboratories have confirmed its suitability (Drew et al., 1998). At the recommended concentration (2%), the quinine solution has an absorbance of >2 from 320 to 367 nm, so the UV irradiance over this range will be determined using this system. Quinine usually contains a number of alkaloid impurities, principally dihydroquinine. However, the level of the latter does not affect its performance as a UV actinometer. [Pg.153]
