National Institutes of Health offices

The National Institute of Health, Office of Alternative Medicine is setting out to research herbal therapies and other alternative therapies. The United States Pharmacopeia (USP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and the American Herbal Pharmacopeia (AHP) are developing herbal therapeutic monographs. 

In mid-1997, the National Institutes of Health Office of AIDS Research convened a panel to define the scientific principles that might serve as a guide for the clinical use of antiretroviral agents. The 11 principles presented below are an amalgamation of knowledge of the life cycle of HIV, the consequences of HTV replication, clinical trials of antiretroviral agents, and scientific opinion.

Section 13 of the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994 created an Office of Dietary Supplements as part of the National Institutes of Health. The office was given two primary responsibilities (1) to explore more fully the potential role of dietary supplements as a significant part of the efforts of the United States to improve health care and (2) to promote scientific study of the benefits of dietary supplements in maintaining health and preventing chronic disease and other health-related conditions.
