In 1987, the National Institute of Ageing in Baltimore, Maryland and the Wisconsin Regional Primate Research Center in Madison, began two trials in primates — 200 rhesus and squirrel monkeys. In April 2001, the Wisconsin team, headed by Richard Weindruch, published an interim report on the effects of calorie restriction on gene expression, and thus the types and levels of proteins synthesized, in rhesus monkeys. To measure the effects, they determined which out of a selected sample of 7000 genes were switched on and which were switched off in the calorie-... [Pg.260]

A recent study compared 144 patients treated within 6 hours of symptom onset with I AT using urokinase versus 147 patients treated with aspirin who were matched for age and stroke severity according to National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) (median 14). The study demonstrated superiority of LAT to aspirin in patients achieving an mRS score of 0-2 (56% vs. 42%, p = 0.037) and in patients achieving an mRS score of 0-1 at 2 years (40% vs. 24%, p = 0.008) with no difference in mortality (23% vs. 24%). °... [Pg.65]

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is defined as the inability to achieve or maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. The definition is very subjective due to differences in desired or needed rigidity in patients of different ages and in different types of relationships. Patients may refer to their dysfunction as impotence, but the National Institutes of Health Consensus Development Conference recommends that the term erectile dysfunction replace the term impotence due to confusion with other forms of sexual dysfunction and the negative connotation associated with the term impotence.1 Patients may also develop libido or ejaculatory disorders, but these are not considered erectile dysfunction. [Pg.779]

A recent report by the National Institutes of Health estimated that at 14 to 22 million people in the United States are affected by an autoimmune disease.1 As a group, these diseases represent a leading cause of death among women under age 65, with systemic lupus erythematosus, multiple sclerosis, and type 1 diabetes being the major sources of this impact on mortality.2 The autoimmune thyroid diseases, type 1 diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis are the most common of the autoimmune diseases (Table 25.1).3-5 Most autoimmune diseases disproportionately affect women. In the thyroid diseases, primary biliary cirrhosis, scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematosus, and Sjogren s syndrome, more than 85% of patients are female, but it is not known why the female predominance is so high in these specific diseases. [Pg.439]

In 1973, Julian was elected to the National Academy of Sciences. On April 19, 1975, he died of cancer at the age of 76. Julian received numerous posthumous honors. Science buildings were named after him at DePauw MacMurray College, Jacksonville, Illinois Illinois State University, Normal, Illinois and Coppin State College, Baltimore. At least four public schools have been named after him. An annual lecture series in his honor is held at DePauw, and a scholarship established by the family supports many DePauw students. A painting of him hangs in the clinical center of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland. In 1990 he was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame (Borman, 1993). [Pg.14]

Extract, administered to men 24 to 58 years old (mean age 43.2), diagnosed with category III prostatitis (CP)/ chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS), at a dose of 325 mg daily for 1 year, produced no appreciable long-term improvement. There was a decrease of mean total National Institutes of Health Chronic Prostatitis Symptom Index score from from 24.7 to 24.6 in the saw palmetto arm (p = 0.41). There were three cases of headache in the saw palmetto group. At the end of the trial, 13 of 32... [Pg.466]
