Doctorate degree

Robert Sidney Calm (1899-1981) was born in England and received a doctoral degree in France. Although not specifically trained as a chemist, he became editor of the British Journal of the Chemical Society. 

Rowland Pettit (1927-19811 was born in Port Lincoln, Australia. He received two doctoral degrees, one from the University of Adelaide in 1952 and the second from the University of London in 1956, working with Michael Dewar. He then became professor of chemistry at the University of Texas, Austin (1957-1981). 

Rnbert Woodward is surely one of the outstanding American synthetic organic chemists of all time. His astonishing record of successful syntheses of biologically important substances has won him ten honorary doctorate degrees and at least as many major awards here and abroad.

Carothers reached a milestone in his career on May 19, 1924, when he defended his thesis and received his Ph.D. At the age of 28, he was older than most recent Ph.D. s, but the chemistry faculty considered him one of the most brilliant students ever to be awarded a doctoral degree at Illinois.

Kipping, a Manchester native, studied with Roscoe and Schorlemmer, then spent a year (1886) in Munich at Adolf von Baeyer s laboratory where Perkin, Jr., was Privatdozent and von Baeyer s assistant. Soumita Ghosh is a postdoctoral researcher in the Diabetes section in National Institute on Aging, Baltimore. She is involved in developing targeted proteomics technique for cannabinoid proteins. During her PhD., she worked in field of NMR metabolomics of murine cerebral malaria. She obtained her doctoral degree from Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in 2013. She obtained her MSc from IIT Kharagpur in 2008 and BSc from Calcutta university in 2006. 

With respect to research specialties, the largest proportion of interviewees concentrated in organic chemistry, followed by physical chemistry (Table 3.6). Few concentrated in analytical chemistry. There were some cohort differences. For example, organic chemistry dominated the specialties in Cohorts I (before 1955), III (1965-1974), and IV (1975-1984) while both organic chemistry and physical chemistry led Cohort II (1955-1964) and physical chemistry was the leading specialty of those earning doctorates in Cohort V (1985-1995). In 1910 Niels began work on his Ph.D. degree. Harald, the younger brother, received his doctoral degree the same year.
