The minimum detectable level is estimated with the dinifroaniline signal-to-noise ratios (S/N). With fortification levels between 0.2 and 0.5mgkg the recovery of trifluralin from plant matrices is 70-99% with the LOD/LOQ being 0.005 mg kg according to the analytical method of the Ministry of the Environment, Japan. In multiresidue analysis by GC/NPD, the percent recoveries of pendimethalin from each crop with a fortification level of 0.25 mg kg were brown rice 70, potato 70, cabbage 80, letmce 89, carrot 84, cucumber 64, shiitake 74, apple 76, strawberry 99, and banana 99%. The LOD for each sample was 0.01 mg kg for pendimethalin. In residue analysis by GC/ECD, recoveries of the majority of dinifroaniline herbicides from fortified samples of carrot, melon, and tomato at fortification levels of 0.04—0.10 mg kg ranged from 79 to 92%. The LODs were benfluralin 0.001, pendimethalin 0.002 and trifluralin 0.001 mg kg for the GC/ECD method. ...

A 20-g homogenized cereal or vegetable sample is extracted with an organic solvent such as acetone. Alter filtration, the solvent extract is concentrated by rotary evaporation to about 20 mL, below 40 °C. The residue is transferred with 5% sodium chloride solution and partitioned twice with n-hexane. The n-hexane extracts are dried by anhydrous sodium sulfate, which is subjected to a cleanup procedure by Horisil or silica gel column chromatography. The eluate is concentrated to dryness and the residue is dissolved in an appropriate amount of acetone for GC/ECD (Ministry of the Environment, Japan).

The acceptable method recoveries using untreated plant matrices at fortification levels between 10 and 50 times the LOD must be from 70 to 120%. The relative standard deviation (RSD) must be within the range 10-20% (according to the analytical method of the Ministry of the Environment, Japan).

A review is presented of the findings of a study of PVC as a packaging material undertaken by a committee of experts set up by the Spanish Ministry of the Environment. It was concluded that PVC does not pose a threat to health or the environment, that it complies with requirements for specific packaging applications, and that PVC packaging waste can be easily recycled and safely incinerated. We have a U.S. sytem which could satisfactorily resolve the conflict. I propose that we take the approach of permitting confidentiality claims for the identity of an existing substance, if they can be justified to the national authority, such as a ministry of the environment, which will consider whether confidentiality reasons are sufficient to merit excepting that item from inventory requirements.

Compressed gas is being used in most current demonstration vehicles. But, the path to commercialization of any major new technology is a long one. In 2003 Toyota recalled some of its hydrogen-powered fuel cell vehicles when a leak was found in the fuel tank of one of the cars leased to Japan s Ministry of the Environment. The leak was found when a driver at the ministry heard a strange noise in the car when he was filling up the hydrogen tank. The problem was quickly identified and fixed a few weeks later.
