While the general treatment of non-Newtonian liquids is beyond the scope of this review, it may be noted that limited work in this area has given results similar to those described for Newtonian liquids. Plots of power number group against Reynolds number can be used if the Reynolds number is modified to include a parameter characterizing the non-Newtonian behavior. Metzner reviews the subject of non-Newtonian flow in a recent publication (M8). 

Liquid-solid transitions in suspensions are especially complicated to study since they are accompanied by additional phenomena such as order-disorder transition of particulates [98,106,107], anisotropy [108], particle-particle interactions [109], Brownian motion, and sedimentation-particle convection [109], Furthermore, the size, size distribution, and shape of the filler particles strongly influence the rheological properties [108,110]. More comprehensive reviews on the rheology of suspensions and rubber modified polymer melts were presented by Metzner [111] and Masuda et al. [112], respectively.

A review by Bird and Wiest [6] gives a more complete list of existing viscoelastic models. The upper convective model and the White-Metzner model are very similar with the exception that the White-Metzner model incorporates the strain rate effects of the relaxation time and the viscosity. Both models provide a first order approximation to flows, in which shear rate dependence and memory effects are important. However, both models predict zero second normal stress coefficients. The Giesekus model is molecular-based, non-linear in nature and describes thepower law region for viscosity andboth normal stress coefficients. The Phan-Thien Tanner models are based on network theory and give non-linear stresses. Both the Giesekus and Phan-Thien Tanner models have been successfully used to model complex flows. 

The first volume begins with a comprehensive review by Prof. Jose Luis Garcia Ruano and Dr. Belen Cid de la Plata of asymmetric cycloaddition mediated by sulfoxides, including dipolar and other processes in addition to Diels-Alder chemistry. It is followed by a discussion of the synthetic uses of thiocarbonyl compounds by Prof. Patrick Metzner.

Rangel-Nafalle, Metzner and Wissbrun (8) reviewed studies on solubility phenomena in deforming solutions and developed an expression for stress-induced phase separation in polymer solutions. Other recent studies in this field were published by Wolf et al. (9-13) by Mazich and Carr (14) and by Vrahopoulou-Gilbert and McHugh (15). 

Utracki and Fisa (1982) and Metzner (1985) review the rheology of (asymmetric) fibre-and flake-filled plastics, noting the importance of the filler-polymer interface, filler-filler interactions, filler concentration and filler-particle properties in determining rheological phenomena such as yield-stress, normal-stress and viscosity profiles (thixotropy and rheo-pexy, dilatancy and shear thinning).

This category mainly comprises fiUed and reinforced polymer melts. There are numerous reviews on the topic [Chaffey, 1983 Goetder, 1984 Metzner, 1985 Utracki, 1987, 1988 Utracki and Vu-JQianh, 1992], There is particularly strong interest in flow of polymeric composites filled with anisometric, reinforcing, particles, with properties that strongly depend on the flow induced morphology and distribution of residual stresses.

Compare eqs. (4.1) - (4.3.). The modified power number, is s 70 for turbines and around 50 for pitched blade impellers (Metzner et al. 1957, Bates et al, 1963). Note that the ecific power consumption is independent of any length scale now. When the liquid is pseudoplastic, wluch means that the apparent viscosity decreases with increasing shear rate, the relation between power requirements and stirring rate is more complex (see review by Tatterson, 1991). A single small impeller is then not effective, since it may happen that in zones away from the impeller the liquid will almost stand still, which may impede a thorou circulation together. The combination of a propeller with a draught tube is then more effective.
