Parameter for MFC characterization

Open circuit voltage (OCV), denoted by Eqcv, is the voltage between the anode and the cathode when an MFC is at open circuit, similar with conventional fuel cells. Note the OCV is different from total cell potential, as discussed above generally OCV is lower than the total cell potential, due to different sources resulting in overpotentials. OCV is usually measured under open circuit by a multi-meter or data acquisition system. [Pg.214]

Assuming 7, Tf,-, and Rg are current [A], internal resistance [f2], and external load resistance of an MFC [S2], According to Ohm s law, current flowing through the external load can be written as  [Pg.214]

In order to evaluate the performance of the MF C, the maximum current and power output is normalized to unit electrode area or unit of chamber volume, to get areal or volumetric current/power densities  [Pg.214]
