At the beginning of the twenty-first century, the century of psychoanalysis may be giving way to that of brain chemistry and neuroscience. Psychotherapy is now supplemented and sometimes even replaced by antidepressants, anti-psychotics, and other pharmaceutical responses to the chemistry of the brain. Neuroscience is beginning to provide physical explanations for cognition, emotion—even subjectivity. At this border of science and our deepest sense of our mental and even spiritual selves, alchemy is again demonstrating its relevance and durability. One final realm in which alchemical tropes became (and remain) common is that of psychedelic drugs.7... [Pg.191]

Because Ecstasy can produce mild hallucinations, it is often referred to as a psychedelic drug having effects similar to those of LSD. Unlike other psychedelic drugs, however, Ecstasy does not produce vivid perceptual and visual distortions, like walls and ceilings turning into liquid. Rather, the perception of colors, sound, music, and touch appears to be intensified by Ecstasy. In addition, the perception of time may be slowed or otherwise altered. [Pg.35]

LSD, mescaline and other psychedelic drugs cause psychosis, but their perceptual and cognitive changes do not resemble schizophrenia. [Pg.80]

These three volunteers represented only a fraction of the varieties of experience we observed in our volunteers. Other publications provide additional examples. In their highly scholarly book, Psychedelic Drugs Reconsidered, Lester Grinspoon and James Bakalar provide many other examples of individual personal experiences. Highly literate or artistic individuals often describe elaborate spiritual visions or magical mystery tours (as in the Beatles song, perhaps inspired by such trips). [Pg.58]

Sasha had some peyote plants (the natural source of mescaline) growing in front of his house. The DEA had not asked him to remove them, which surprised me in view of Sasha s firm advocacy of the repeal of the prohibition of marijuana and psychedelic drugs - a view, incidentally, with which I fully sympathized. [Pg.241]

But Sasha was by no means mad he was just a free spirit, not particularly concerned with appearances as long as he could synthesize and study his family of intriguing psychochemicals. He and his wife proved to be most generous friends. Sasha has lent or given me several useful books and articles in the past few years on subjects relating to LSD and other psychedelic drugs. He recently provided me with a great deal of difficult-to-find information that has helped in the preparation of this book. [Pg.242]

In addition to his extensive freelance work on psychedelic compounds, Shulgin has also served as a member of the faculty at San Francisco State University and the University of California at Berkeley. He is perhaps best known to the general public as the author, with his wife Ann, of two books on psychedelic drugs, PiHKAL Phenethylamines I Have Known and Loved A Chemical Love Story), and TiHKAL [Tryptamines I Have Known and Loved The Chemistry Continues). The two books provide not only a fascinating autobiographical sketch of the authors lives and works but a detailed introduction to the chemical synthesis, characterization, and properties of the chemicals belonging to major psychedelicfamilies, the phenylethylamines and the tryptamines. [Pg.101]

One famous set of DMT studies involves physician Rick Strassman, Clinical Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. In 1990, Strassman began the first new research in the United States in more than twenty years on the effects of psychedelic drugs on humans. During the project s five years, he administered approximately four hundred doses of DMT to sixty human volunteers. [Pg.83]
