Ahyl alcohol undergoes reactions typical of saturated, aUphatic alcohols. Ahyl compounds derived from ahyl alcohol and used industriahy, are widely manufactured by these reactions. For example, reactions of ahyl alcohol with acid anhydrides, esters, and acid chlorides yield ahyl esters, such as diahyl phthalates and ahyl methacrylate reaction with chloroformate yields carbonates, such as diethylene glycol bis(ahyl carbonate) addition of ahyl alcohol to epoxy groups yields products used to produce ahyl glycidyl ether (33,34). [Pg.74]

Terpolymers made from two different olefins and CO are known. They were first described in Brubaker s initial patent and involved the free radical initiated terpolymerization of CO and C2H with another olefin such as propylene, isobutylene, butadiene, vinyl acetate, diethyl maleate or tetrafluoroethylene More recently, in another patent, Hammer has described the free radical initiated terpolymerization of CO and C2H with vinyl esters, vinyl ethers or methyl methacrylate 26Reaction temperatures of 180-200 °C and a combined pressure of 186 MPa were employed. Typically a CO QH4 olefin molar ratio of 10 65 25 was observed in the terpolymers. In other patents, Hammer 27,28) has described the formation of copolymers with pendant epoxy groups by the free radical initiated polymerization of CO, QH4, vinyl acetate and glycidyl methacrylate. Reaction conditions similar to those stated above were employed, and a typical CO C2H vinyl acetate glycidyl methacrylate molar ratio of 10 65 20 5 was observed in the product polymer. [Pg.130]

Table 10.30 clearly shows that water and ethylene glycol promote the Michael-type reactions. Excellent yields of /i-aminonitriles are obtained in these media when a,yS-unsaturated nitriles are reacted. In all cases the yields are higher than those reached at 300 MPa in acetonitrile solution [100]. Notable exceptions are observed with methyl methacrylate reactions. In these reactions no Michael adduct is formed in aqueous solution, at variance with the pressure-assisted reaction which leads to modest yields (11-23 %). Such a dichotomy in reactivity is relevant to the prevalence of the reverse reaction. yff-Aminoesters undergo rapid reversion to reactants in aqueous solutions which are highly polar, while they are quite stable in acetonitrile [74]. The absence of reactivity in water persists even at 300 MPa meaning that the use of higher pressure is unable to shift the equilibrium toward the aminoester. [Pg.342]

The methacrylation reaction reached a conversion value of approximately 55% after 23 h. Adequate values for hydrogel synthesis (ca. 10-30% conversion) were reached after 3-7 hours. These results also indicate that the reproducibility and controllability of the condensation reaction are rather good. [Pg.356]

Up-scaled runs of the methacrylation reaction confirmed the preliminary results. The time needed to reach a certain conversion of H MA-lm was shorter, probably due to stirring that could be used when the reaction was carried out on a larger scale (1.4 g hemicellulose). Combination and disproportionation are competitive processes and do not occur to the same extent for all polymers. For example, at 60°C termination is virtually 100% by combination for polyacrylonitrile and 100% by disproportionation for poly (vinyl acetate). Dehydrogenation of Propionates. Oxidative dehydrogenation of propionates to acrylates employing vapor-phase reactions at high temperatures (400—700°C) and short contact times is possible. Acryhc stmctural adhesives have been modified by elastomers in order to obtain a phase-separated, toughened system. A significant contribution in this technology has been made in which acryhc adhesives were modified by the addition of chlorosulfonated polyethylene to obtain a phase-separated stmctural adhesive (11). Such adhesives also contain methyl methacrylate, glacial methacrylic acid, and cross-linkers such as ethylene glycol dimethacrylate [97-90-5]. The polymerization initiation system, which includes cumene hydroperoxide, N,1S7-dimethyl- -toluidine, and saccharin, can be apphed to the adherend surface as a primer, or it can be formulated as the second part of a two-part adhesive. Modification of cyanoacrylates using elastomers has also been attempted copolymers of acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene ethylene copolymers with methylacrylate or copolymers of methacrylates with butadiene and styrene have been used. However, because of the extreme reactivity of the monomer, modification of cyanoacrylate adhesives is very difficult and material purity is essential in order to be able to modify the cyanoacrylate without causing premature reaction. [Pg.233]

In 1954 the surface fluorination of polyethylene sheets by using a soHd CO2 cooled heat sink was patented (44). Later patents covered the fluorination of PVC (45) and polyethylene bottles (46). Studies of surface fluorination of polymer films have been reported (47). The fluorination of polyethylene powder was described (48) as a fiery intense reaction, which was finally controlled by dilution with an inert gas at reduced pressures. Direct fluorination of polymers was achieved in 1970 (8,49). More recently, surface fluorinations of poly(vinyl fluoride), polycarbonates, polystyrene, and poly(methyl methacrylate), and the surface fluorination of containers have been described (50,51). Partially fluorinated poly(ethylene terephthalate) and polyamides such as nylon have excellent soil release properties as well as high wettabiUty (52,53). The most advanced direct fluorination technology in the area of single-compound synthesis and synthesis of high performance fluids is currently practiced by 3M Co. of St. Paul, Minnesota, and by Exfluor Research Corp. of Austin, Texas. [Pg.278]

Difluoroethanol is prepared by the mercuric oxide cataly2ed hydrolysis of 2-bromo-l,l-difluoroethane with carboxyHc acid esters and alkaH metal hydroxides ia water (27). Its chemical reactions are similar to those of most alcohols. It can be oxidi2ed to difluoroacetic acid [381-73-7] (28) it forms alkoxides with alkaH and alkaline-earth metals (29) with alkoxides of other alcohols it forms mixed ethers such as 2,2-difluoroethyl methyl ether [461-57-4], bp 47°C, or 2,2-difluoroethyl ethyl ether [82907-09-3], bp 66°C (29). 2,2-Difluoroethyl difluoromethyl ether [32778-16-8], made from the alcohol and chlorodifluoromethane ia aqueous base, has been iavestigated as an inhalation anesthetic (30,31) as have several ethers made by addition of the alcohol to various fluoroalkenes (32,33). Methacrylate esters of the alcohol are useful as a sheathing material for polymers ia optical appHcations (34). The alcohol has also been reported to be useful as a working fluid ia heat pumps (35). The alcohol is available ia research quantities for ca 6/g (1992). [Pg.293]

The organic and aqueous phases are prepared in separate tanks before transferring to the reaction ketde. In the manufacture of a styrenic copolymer, predeterrnined amounts of styrene (1) and divinylbenzene (2) are mixed together in the organic phase tank. Styrene is the principal constituent, and is usually about 90—95 wt % of the formulation. The other 5—10% is DVB. It is required to link chains of linear polystyrene together as polymerization proceeds. DVB is referred to as a cross-linker. Without it, functionalized polystyrene would be much too soluble to perform as an ion-exchange resin. Developments in aliphatic isocyanates include the synthesis of polymeric aliphatic isocyanates and masked or blocked diisocyanates for appflcafions in which volatility or reactivity ate of concern. The vast majority of commercial apphcations of methacryhc acid and its esters stem from their facile free-radical polymerizabiUty (see Initiators, FREE-RADICAl). Solution, suspension, emulsion, and bulk polymerizations have been used to advantage. Although of much less commercial importance, anionic polymerizations of methacrylates have also been extensively studied. Strictiy anhydrous reaction conditions at low temperatures are required to yield high molecular weight polymers in anionic polymerization. Although only limited commercial use has been made of this technique, it does provide a route to block copolymers that is not available from ordinary free-radical polymerizations. Transesterification of methyl methacrylate with the appropriate alcohol is often the preferred method of preparing higher alkyl and functional methacrylates. The reaction is driven to completion by the use of excess methyl methacrylate and by removal of the methyl methacrylate—methanol a2eotrope. A variety of catalysts have been used, including acids and bases and transition-metal compounds such as dialkjitin oxides (57), titanium(IV) alkoxides (58), and zirconium acetoacetate (59). The use of the transition-metal catalysts allows reaction under nearly neutral conditions and is therefore more tolerant of sensitive functionality in the ester alcohol moiety. In addition, transition-metal catalysts often exhibit higher selectivities than acidic catalysts, particularly with respect to by-product ether formation. [Pg.248]
