Contact dermatitis can occur from exposure to cement and has been considered an occupational hazard for construction workers (Turk and Rietschel 1993 Roto et al. 1996 Zachariae et al. 1996). The problem develops because chromium(VI)-con-taining residues from blast furnaces are incorporated into cement. Some countries add ferrous sulfate to cement to reduce the amount of soluble hexavalent chromate in the product (Turk and Rietschel 1993 Roto etal. 1996 Zachariae etal. 1996). In the UK, chromium and chromates accounted for 8.1% of the allergic contact dermatitis cases (Meyer et al. 2000). In Finland, chromium causes 5.6% of ACD, with tanners, cast concrete workers, leader goods workers, and metal plating/coating workers being at greatest risk (Kanerva et al. 2000). In Denmark, the chromium(VI) content of 35% of... [Pg.722]

The understanding of such a problem is obvious from the example of a metallic plate coated with an homogeneous material receiving a plane wave at normal incidence. The calculation of the reflection coefficient is then simple. The surface impedance is defined by ... [Pg.373]

Furthermore, the strength of the waU materials and the different factors associated with electrolytic co-deposition kinetics play additional roles in the development of composite coatings with predetermined properties. Hopefully, future research projects wiU lead to the practical application of liquid microcapsules to improve the properties of metal plating coatings by using this novel technique of electrolytic co-deposition in a variety of aspects. [Pg.341]

A quartz difliiser plate mounted in a holder so that the plate is oriented at an angle of 45 to the excitation light propagation direction or a metal plate coated with an MgO dim. This plate should be mounted in a holder so that it makes an angle of 35 to the excitation light propagation direction. [Pg.53]

In a catalytic plate reactor (CPR), metal plates coated with a suitable catalyst are arranged such that exothermic and endothermic reactions take place in alternate channels (Figure 5.26). These channels typically have a height of the order of millimetres and a catalyst thickness of the order of microns. [Pg.144]

Essentially, these thermometers are thermally insulated thin metal plates coated with special black and white paint, respectively their temperature is measured using temperature sensors attached to the back side. The degree of absorption of... [Pg.1468]

Plate anodes were used for corrosion protection in order to avoid damage due to erosion and cavitation. These consisted of enamelled steel bodies in which a metal oxide-coated titanium anode 1 dm in surface area was fitted. The enamel... [Pg.470]

For most low-pressure air systems, the flow is through sheet metal duct, either circular or rectangular. For very large flows and/or pressures higher than light gage duct work can withstand, the duct is usually made of fahricated metal plate and in some instances may he coated or lined for protection from corrosive process gases. [Pg.565]

Sprayed, vacuum-deposited and plated coatings can be applied to most metals and to many non-metals, e.g. vacuum deposition is applied to many substrates including plastics spray application can be used for coating fabric, plastic and paper. Hot dipping and other diffusion processes are dependent on the nature of the substrate for the properties of the coating. Most commercial applications of aluminium coatings are on iron and steel with smaller quantities applied to aluminium alloys and plastics. [Pg.465]

Tin-lead can be substituted for tin for other purposes, although the toxicity of lead limits the field of application. The corrosion resistance is usually no better than that of unalloyed tin, but there may be some saving of cost in applications such as wash-boilers and other vessels for non-potable liquids and light engineering components formed from sheet metal. Heavily coated terne-plates may be used for the fuel tanks of stoves and vehicles. [Pg.510]

Cure of alkyd resin A varnish is prepared by mixing 100 g of the alkyd resin prepared above, 0.05 g of Co(II) 2-ethylhexanoate, 0.05 g of calcium 2-etliyl-hexanoate, and 0.02 g of lead 2-ethylhexanoate. This mixture is held for 24 h in a closed flask before use. A thin layer of this varnish, applied on a metal plate, forms a hard, glossy coating after 24 h drying at room temperature. [Pg.102]

Add wood furnish (384 g, moisture content 6.02%) to the bowl of a rotary blade paddle mixer (such as a Kitchen-Aid KSM90) and agitate at the lowest speed setting. Add Mondur 541 (7.39 g, 1.9% w/w, a polymeric diphenylmethane diisocyanate of 31.5% NCO, Bayer) dropwise over a 5-min period using a disposable syringe. Continue blending for an additional 10 min and then transfer the blend to an 8 x 8 x 2 -in. metal form at the bottom of which is a metal plate which fits inside. The resin-coated furnish is evenly spread inside the form and another metal plate is placed on top. All parts of the form and plates are presprayed with mold release. The completed form assembly is placed into a hydraulic press (such as a model PW-22 manufactured by Pasadena Hydraulics) with platens heated at 350°F. The furnish is then pressed between the two form plates to a thickness of j in. Press controls are used to ensure consistency of board thickness. The assembly is heated for 4 min. before demolding the cured wood panel. [Pg.257]

Protecting a surface from corrosion by coating can be accomplished by a number of well-established processes which include paints, metal plating (with zinc or cadmium), diffusion, thermal spraying, and, more recently, vapor deposition processes. Of these physical vapor deposition (PVD) is used extensively in corrosion protection. Typical applications are ... [Pg.437]

Alternatively, an aqueous solution of sodium diethyldithiocarbamate (3.5%, 2 ml) or freshly prepared solution of dithizone in chloroform (0.1%, 10 ml) was added to sample A. The metal diethyldithiocarbamates (termed sample B) or metal dithizon-ates (termed sample C) thus formed were extracted in chloroform. The volume of chloroform extract was reduced to 1.0 ml. Aliquots (10 pi) each of sample B and sample C were chromatographed on plates coated with 0.25-mm layer of silica gel G using benzene -t methyl isopropylketone (50 1) and toluene -r chloroform (50 1), respectively, as mobile phases. Metal dithizonates were self-detected. The namral colored metal diethyldithiocarbamates were converted into brown spots by spraying... [Pg.362]

Place emulsion-coated slide in a horizontal position and wipe the back of the dipped slide with a paper towel or a damp sponge and place the slide flat on a drying rack protected from safelight exposure for 1 h at 45-50% relative humidity (RH). The emulsion will gel in approximately 1 h but can be speeded up by placing the slide on a cold metal plate for 15-... [Pg.58]

DSA-02 oxide-coated Ti anode (DSA = Dimensionally Stable Anode) is placed, thus creating a large cathode volume. The effluent solution flows perpendicularly through the electrodes with a typical flow rate of 0.5 dm3 s-1. The flowthrough metal electrodes have an active area approximately 15 times their geometric area. The cell allows air sparging to increase the mass-transfer. The current efficiency is about 40% when the inlet concentration of the metal ions is 150 to 1500 ppm and the concentration at the out-let is about 50 ppm. The cell is currently used for the treatment of recirculated wash-waters from acid copper, copper cyanide, zinc cyanide, zinc chloride, cadmium sulphate, cadmium cyanide and precious metal plating and washwaters from electroless copper deposition. Since the foam metal electrodes are relatively expensive the electrodes... [Pg.190]

Once the plate starts to corrode, many problems appear to affect performance and durability, even serious failure, of fhe fuel cells. For example, fhe interface contact resistance between the corroded metal plates and GDL will increase to reduce the power output. The corrosion products (mainly various cations) will contaminate the catalyst and membrane and affect eir normal functions because the polymer membrane essentially is a strong cation exchanger and the catalyst is susceptible to the ion impurity. Hence, adding a corrosion-resistant coating to the metal plate will almost inevitably assure the performance and long-term durability of a sfack. [Pg.327]
