Material selection developing

Several challenges have been encountered underway and important issues include raw materials selection, development and production of a suitable alumina support as well as selection and adaptation of conditions and equipment for impregnation, drying, calcination and reduction. Early production batches showed clearly inferior performance compared to laboratory samples. This challenge was resolved in collaboration with the catalyst manufacturer after detailed investigations into the basic mechanisms involved in the scale-up. [Pg.335]

Other above-ground continuous flow systems have been designed and operated for SCWO processes. A system developed by ModeU Development Corp. (Modec) uses a tubular reactor and can be operated at temperatures above 500°C. It employs a pressure letdown system in which soHd, Hquids, and gases are separated prior to pressure release. This simplifies valve design and material selection on the Hquid leg. [Pg.502]

Biomaterials for Cardiovascular Devices. Perhaps the most advanced field of biomaterials is that for cardiovascular devices. For several decades bodily parts have been replaced or repaired by direct substitution using natural tissue or selected synthetic materials. The development of implantable-grade synthetic polymers, such as siHcones and polyurethanes, has made possible the development of advanced cardiac assist devices (see... [Pg.181]

In certain cases, it is necessary to choose materials for equipment to be used in a process developed in the laboratory and not yet in operation on a plant scale. Under such circumstances, it is obviously impossible to make plant tests. A good procedure in such cases is to construct a pilot plant, using either the cheapest materials available or some other materials selected on the basis of past experience or of laboratory tests. While the pilot plant is being operated to check on the process itself, specimens can be exposed in the operating equipment as a guide to the choice of materials for the large-scale plant or as a means of confirming the suitability of the materials chosen for the pilot plant. [Pg.2438]

The considerable development in computer technology in recent years has provided an additional aid to material selection. This is considered further in the next section. [Pg.894]

Ashby has taken his approach a stage further with the introduction of physically based estimates of material properties where these have not been measured (Ashby 1998. Bassett et al. 1998), where an independent check on values is thought desirable or where property ranges of categories of materials would be useful. Figure 5.5(c) is one example of the kind of estimates which his approach makes possible. A still more recent development of Ashby s approach to materials selection is an analysis in depth of the total financial cost of using alternative materials (for different number of identical items manufactured). Thus, an expanded metallic foam beam offers the... [Pg.201]

It also specifies data requirements, assumptions, limitations, eventual type of critical review, and the report requirements. For example, a study could be done to select between one of two materials when developing a dust transport container for a baghouse filter. The intended audience may be the designers, the results being used to indicate which one of the two materials provides the lowest environmental impact. The system function may be to transport dust from the baghouse filter to a landfill site, and the functional unit may be one metric ton or m of dust. The system boundaries may be described by considering which processes are included and which are outside the system limits. [Pg.1359]

Although the source of raw materials may not be at the plant site, it is an e.xtremcly important factor in the ultimate location of the plant. Process development work and economic studies will indicate the minimum standards for raw materials selection. When these standards have been determined, all possible sources of acceptable raw materials can be located and a detailed analysis can proceed. [Pg.163]

Other detrimental factors which should to be taken into account in the materials selection process include temperature cycling and the presence of halide gases. Specialist alloys containing rare earth element additions such as cerium, lanthanum and yttrium have been developed for use in certain environments up to 130°C. [Pg.900]

The continuous development of new materials has resulted in changing attitudes towards materials selection for corrosion control, and the range of materials now available can be gauged from the Materials Selector Review", which becomes considerably thicker each time it is updated. Plastics are replacing metals for a variety of applications and a recent application is the use of g.r.p. in place of metals for the construction of hulls of hovercrafts the corrosive action of the high velocity spray of sea-water is such that very few metals are capable of withstanding it and the use of g.r.p. represents the... [Pg.1456]

Characterization of the finally-produced material includes final physical characterization along the lines described under interim physical characterization and chemical characterization (homogeneity). The latter includes selection, development, assessment, and validation of methodologies for homogeneity testing includ-... [Pg.25]

Usually, a material selected to be used as PCM does not fulfill all of the above requirements. Therefore, different strategies have been developed to solve or avoid potential problems. Some of these strategies are now discussed. A more detailed discussion of this subject can be found in Lane (1983) and Lane (1986). [Pg.265]

A classical approach to driving the unfavorable equilibrium of an enzymatic process is to couple it to another, irreversible enzymatic process. Griengl and coworkers have applied this concept to asymmetric synthesis of 1,2-amino alcohols with a threonine aldolase [24] (Figure 6.7). While the equilibrium in threonine aldolase reactions typically does not favor the synthetic direction, and the bond formation leads to nearly equal amounts of two diastereomers, coupling the aldolase reaction with a selective tyrosine decarboxylase leads to irreversible formation of aryl amino alcohols in reasonable enantiomeric excess via a dynamic kinetic asymmetric transformation. A one-pot, two-enzyme asymmetric synthesis of amino alcohols, including noradrenaline and octopamine, from readily available starting materials was developed [25]. [Pg.131]

The targets of electrocatalysis are at the basis of recent developments in the field of water electrolysis. First, it is necessary to distinguish between materials evaluation and materials selection. The former is the search for materials with better and better properties for the wanted electrode process. The latter implies global considerations of applicability. This is probably what makes academic research differ from R D. The former is favored by scientifically exciting performance, in the latter it is necessary to find a compromise between, for instance, activity and stability or between efficiency and economic convenience. [Pg.245]
