Global Considerations

The targets of electrocatalysis are at the basis of recent developments in the field of water electrolysis. First, it is necessary to distinguish between materials evaluation and materials selection. The former is the search for materials with better and better properties for the wanted electrode process. The latter implies global considerations of applicability. This is probably what makes academic research differ from R D. The former is favored by scientifically exciting performance, in the latter it is necessary to find a compromise between, for instance, activity and stability or between efficiency and economic convenience. [Pg.245]

Finally, a few words must be added about spatial averages. They are important in all global considerations of atmospheric trace constituents. A continuous three-dimensional representation of data is neither practical nor... [Pg.5]

For global considerations of cloud chemistry, it would be desirable to have data on the spatial distribution and the average lifetime of clouds in the troposphere. Such data, unfortunately, are not generally available. De Bary and Moller (1960) have evaluated aircraft observations of cloud coverage over Germany to derive frequency distributions of clouds with height. Their results suggest that at midlatitudes the clouds are concentrated... [Pg.382]

Global uranium flux calculations have typically been based on the following two assumptions (a) riverine-end member concentrations of dissolved uranium are relatively constant, and (b) no significant input or removal of uranium occurs in coastal environments. Other sources of uranium to the ocean may include mantle emanations, diffusion through pore waters of deep-sea sediments, leaching of river-borne sediments by seawater," and remobilization through reduction of a Fe-Mn carrier phase. However, there is still considerable debate... [Pg.44]

When a single technique is employed only local life-cycle cost minimization is achieved. If the global life-cycle cost is to be minimized, a number of techniques have to be applied (Watson et al., 1996). In this case, tools and techniques shouldn t compete with each other, but be complementary in the product development process. The correct positioning of the various off-line tools and techniques in the product development process, therefore, becomes an important consideration in their effective usage. Patterns of application have been proposed by a number of workers over several years (Brown et al., 1989 Jakobsen, 1993 Norell, 1993) and the importance of concurrency has been highlighted as a critical factor in their use (Poolton and Barclay, 1996). [Pg.266]

Other estimates placed the film and bottle market to be of a similar size in Japan while globally the bottle market was about 20% of the total. Together with other data this suggests that the fibre and filament market absorbs about 72% of PET capacity, containers about 19%, film about 7% and mouldings 2%. Considerable quantities of PET bottles are, however, recycled into fibres for use, for example, in outdoor clothing. [Pg.723]

But for power station applications, the thermal efficiency is not the only measure of the performance of a plant. While a new type of plant may involve some reduction in running costs due to improved thermal efficiency, it may also involve additional capital costs. The cost of electricity produced is the crucial criterion within the overall economics, and this depends not only on the thermal efficiency and capital costs, but also on the price of fuel, operational and maintenance costs, and the taxes imposed. Yet another factor, which has recently become important, is the production by gas turbine plants of greenhouse gases (mainly carbon dioxide) which contribute to global warming. Many countries are now considering the imposition of a special tax on the amount of CO2 produced by a power plant, and this may adversely affect the economics. So consideration of a new plant in future will involve not only the factors listed above but also the amount of CO2 produced per unit of electricity together with the extra taxes that may have to be paid. [Pg.131]

In comminution processes, energy consumption is often the most important design consideration. In fact, it has been estimated that 1 per cent of global energy consumption is used in comminution. Energy consumption is a function of the size and hardness of the material and the required degree of breakage or surface area formation. Empirically... [Pg.139]
