The concentration levels of TriCDTs, TeCDTs, and PeCDTs in emissions and waste from an aluminum smelter and a car shredder have been found to be comparable to those of PCDDs and PCDFs. The number of individual TeCDT isomers was larger than the number of TeCDD isomers. PCDTs were effectively removed by the baghouse filter, more effectively than the PCDDs. Different TeCDT isomers had different adsorption tendencies on the filter system. Probably some samples from the car shredder contained some TriCTAs and possibly also some TeCTAs in low concentrations. The Clean Air Act Amendments of 1970, which followed the original Clean Air Act of 1967, set national air quality standards for six criteria air pollutants NOx, SOx, ozone, carbon monoxide (CO), particulates and lead. The result was the removal of lead from gasoline and the installation of emission control technologies, including baghouse filters for particulate control, wet and dry scrubbers for SOx control and automobile exhaust catalysts for controlling hydrocarbons (HC), CO and NOx. As a consequence, lead emissions have been dramatically reduced, SOx emissions are being controlled, and automobile CO, HC and NOx emissions have decreased by nearly a factor of 10 (over uncontrolled emissions). In spite of these dramatic improvements, in 1989 approximately 130 million people in the U.S. lived in 96 areas which did not meet air quality standards either in ozone, in carbon monoxide, or in both [2]. [Pg.3]

The method commonly used for preparation of diesel particle extracts employs a Soxhlet extaction apparatus with dichloromethane as the extracting solvent. This procedure has been found optimal for extraction of the mutagenic components adsorbed to the particulate (4). Most of our studies have been conducted with an extract prepared from particulate collected by electrostatic precipitation, which allowed the collection of a moderate amount of material in a short period of time (5). Extracts were also prepared from diesel particulate collected by two other methods. These extracts and the methods of particle collection are described in Table 1. Many high-performance polymer fibres are used in filter media to meet various specific requirements in diverse filtration applications. Filters made from fluoropol-ymer (Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), and Per-fluoroalkoxy alkane (PFA)) fibres, and membranes have inherent, chemical-resistant, and flame-retardant properties, and they are widely employed to filter aggressive chemicals and acids in the manufacture of wafers and microchips in the microelectronics industry. Ethylene ChloroTriFluoroEthylene (E-CTFE) melt blown fabrics have a unique ability to coalesce difficult liquids and can withstand the piranha effect in filtering ozone enriched ultrapure water. Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) fibres are also chemical resistant, stand high temperature, and are suitable for making baghouse filters. Eilter media made from other high-performance polymer fibres, such as polyamide-imide, polyetherimide (PEI), Polyimide P84 fibre,polyetheretherke-tone, and liquid crystal polymers also appear in the filtration and separation market. [Pg.278]
