Mondello et al. (54) have developed some applications of on-line HPLC-HRGC and HPLC-HRGC/MS in the analysis of citrus essential oils. In particular, they used LC-GC to determine the enantiomeric ratios of monoterpene alcohols in lemon, mandarin, bitter orange and sweet orange oils. LC-GC/MS was used to study the composition of the most common citrus peel, citrus leaf (petitgrain) and flower (neroli) oils. Mandarin oil is obtained by cold pressing the peel of mandarin oranges, the fruits of Citrus reticulata Blanco (Rutaceae). The oil is a greenish-yellow to reddish-orange liquid, depending on the degree of ripeness of the fruit, with a pale blue fluorescence and a characteristic odor, reminiscent of mandarin peel. 

Mandarin oil is used to enrich the bouquet of flavor compositions containing sweet orange oils as the main component. It is also used in liqueurs and perfumery. FCT 1992 (30 suppl.) p. 69 S [8008-31-9], [84929-38-4]. 

Mandarin peel oil volatiles contain many of the same volatiles as orange peel oil however, there are a few differences such as elevated levels of dimethyl an-thranilate and thymol. It has been reported [54] that the characteristic mandarin peel oil aroma was due to a combination of dimethyl anthranilate, thymol, a-terpinene and /1-pinene.

The type or blend of fruit processed has a significant effect on oil quality. An important aspect of this variable which can be controlled would be to avoid processing mandarin or other varieties in with oranges. Subtle flavor differences, which can be detected by the flavorist, may be imparted to orange oil adulterated with tangelos, murcotts, temples, or tangerines. 

Mandarin Oil, Coldpressed, occurs as a clear, dark orange to red-yellow or brown-orange liquid with a pleasant, orange odor. It often shows a blue fluorescence in diffused light. Oils produced from unripe fruit often show a green color. It is the oil obtained by expression of the peels of the ripe fruit of the mandarin orange, Citrus reticulata Blanco var. Mandarin (Fam. Evers et al. revealed that (-)-3-carene can be used for the identification of sweet orange oil because this enantiomer has only been found in traces in bitter orange oil and is not present in lemon and mandarin oil [34]. 

The Petitgrain oils of the citrus varieties mandarin (Citrus reticulata Blanco) and lemon (Citrus limon (L.) Burm.) are also commercially available, but to a far lesser extent than for bitter orange. Mandarin Petitgrain oil is characterised by its unique sensory impact, which apart from y-terpinene (20-25%) results from its high content of methyl N-methylanthranilate (40-50%) [106-108]. 

Bitter orange oil is obtained by pressing fresh peel from the fruits of Citrus aurantium L. (Rutaceae). It is produced mainly in Mediterranean countries and is a pale yellow to yellowish-brown liquid with a slightly mandarin-like odor and a somewhat bitter aroma.
