Chronic lung disease

Generalized/organ specific (lung disease, anemia, decreased blood supply) Cellular hypoxia (cyanide poisoning of electron transport chain in mitochondria) Inflammatory (pathology from abnormal inflammatory response in the body) Autoimmune and/or chronic diseases (systemic lupus erythmatosus, rheumatoid arthritis)... [Pg.187]

Pneumoconiosis A chronic disease of the lungs resulting from the inhalation of various kinds of dusts. The pneumoconioses which include siderosis (iron oxide), silicosis (free silica), asbestosis (asbestos), etc., generally require a period of years for development. [Pg.252]

The weakness of Lung-Qi is often seen in exposure to seriously polluted air, extreme changes of climate, poor nutrition, chronic diseases and poor constitution. It often occurs in people with poor development of the Lung from lack of physical exercise. [Pg.139]

Sheng Mai San is a formula for treating both Qi and Yin deficiency of the Heart and Lung. It treats the syndrome of Heart-Yin deficiency caused by chronic disease, prolonged intense stress and emotional disturbance it also relieves symptoms such as palpitations, restlessness, anxiousness, anxiety, tiredness and sweating. [Pg.165]

Anxiety, depression, insomnia, different types of phobia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, panic attacks, acute stress disorder. It is also related to chronic diseases, such as anemia, and diseases of the heart and lung. [Pg.300]

Many of our chronic diseases (asthma, lung cancer, emphysema, and bronchitis) could result from air pollution or be directly influenced by air pollution. Air samples can be very complex mixtures and GC is easily adapted to the separation and analyses of such mixtures. Two publications concerned with the adaptation of cryogenic gas chromatography to analyses of air samples illustrate this adaptation (34,35). [Pg.17]

In this and other reviews the lack of long-term data, which is particularly important for understanding the management of a chronic disease that requires many years of therapy for an individual, has been discussed. Data from 4-year open studies suggest that lung function does not deteriorate compared with subcutaneous insulin. However, patients with lung disease have usually been excluded from such studies (276,277). [Pg.410]

Considerable evidence exists from epidemiological and experimental studies for preventive effects of soy or isoflavones against chronic diseases including cancer (breast, prostate, colorectal, lung), osteoporosis, cardiovascular disorders, and menopausal symptoms, but this is not always consistent [Adlercreutz... [Pg.215]

Carotenoids, a class of yellow to deep-red pigments present in many commonly eaten fruits and vegetables, have been hypothesized to play a role in the prevention of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart disease. Most research to date has focused on the relationship between P-carotene and lung cancer. Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers in the U.S., and P-carotene was initially the most thoroughly studied carotenoid because of its role as a vitamin A precursor (Cooper et al., 1999). [Pg.239]

Treating nicotine and tobacco dependence can prevent a variety of costly chronic diseases, including heart disease, cancer, and chronic lung disease. It is estimated that smoking cessation efforts are more cost effective than other commonly provided preventive services such as screening for breast, colon, and cervical cancer, treatment of mildly elevated blood pressure, and treatment of high cholesterol. [Pg.375]

Several pharmaceutical and physiological barriers must be overcome for the successful pulmonary delivery of peptide and protein drugs [3], For example, many of these macromolecular drugs have relatively low permeability when they are administered without any absorption enhancers [4], Furthermore, the clinical toxicology of peptides/proteins in the lung, especially for chronic disease, should be of some concern [6], Therefore, cost-benefit ratios should be evaluated in the... [Pg.209]

The autonomous, sustained production of AVP in the absence of known stimuli for its release is called SIADH. In this syndrome, plasma AVP concentrations are inappropriately increased relative to a low plasma osmolality and to a normal or increased plasma volume. SIADH may be the result of one of several factors production of vasopressin by a malignancy (such as a small cell carcinoma of the lung), the presence of acute and chronic diseases of the central nervous system, pulmonary disorders, or a side effect of certain drug therapies. In addition, as many as 10% of patients undergoing pituitary surgery have a transient SIADH approximately 8 to 9 days after surgery (when the patient is at home), which responds to water restriction (2 to 3 days) and resolves without recurrence. In SIADH, a primary excess of AVP, coupled with unrestricted fluid intake, promotes increased reabsorption of free water by the kidney. The result is a decreased urine volume and an increased urine sodium concentration and urine osmolality. As a consequence of water retention, these patients become modestly volume expanded. The increase in intravascular volume causes hemodilution accompanied by dilutional hyponatremia and a low plasma osmolality. Volume expan-... [Pg.1994]
