Electrochemical detection has also been suggested for determination of underivatized aminoglycosides in edible animal products (3, 19), while laser-based polarimetric detection has also been used in the analysis of underivatized gentamicin in milk (9). Over the past decade, liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry (LC/MS) has evolved from being primarily a research tool, available in a limited number of analytical laboratories, to a robust and widely available analytical and investigative technique (1 3). It is now in widespread use in pharmaceutical, food, environmental, and forensic laboratories and is an indispensable tool in biomedical research. At the time of our previous review of this subject (4), few laboratories were using LC/MS in the analysis of chemicals relevant to the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). This was due to a number of factors, two of which were the cost of instrumentation and a perception that the technique was difficult to implement in an analytical laboratory. In the intervening years, the costs of basic LC/MS have been reduced, and the instrumentation has become robust and easier to operate. LC/MS is now a mature technique that should be considered by all laboratories that are required to analyze chemicals related to the CWC. [Pg.284]

Sensitive analytical methods should be used such as liquid chromatography combined with mass spectroscopy, microbore liquid chromatography and capillary electrophoreses. [Pg.597]

Liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry (Chapter 21) is widely used for rapid and selective drug analysis, and samples can be run in 1 to 3 min. So, faster ways of sample cleanup are needed for processing large numbers of samples. 96-Well plates with small wells (so-called micro titer plates) are widely used for processing large numbers of samples in automated instruments. [Pg.549]

A number of suitable immunoassays and radioimmunoassays are available for measuring the major hormones testosterone, estrogen, LH, and FSH. Some of these assays may need adjustments to ensure that the majority of values fall within the optimal part of the measuring range because the ranges differ between laboratory animal species. Given the similarities in the structures of FSH and LH, some assays can be used for both rats and mice if the antisera are suitable (Jarrell et al. 1988). A number of methods have been described that use gas liquid or liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry, which can be used to measure several of the steroid hormones. The development of various contraceptives has often been helped by these hormone measurements as biomarkers of efficacy rather than markers of toxicity in animal models. [Pg.236]

This review provides an up-to-date overview of the application of analytical procedures based on MS for the characterization of organic natural materials in archaeological and historical objects. Applications that feature the use of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS), Py-GC/MS, high performance liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry (HPLC/MS), and direct MS analysis such as matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (MALDI-MS), electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), and direct exposure mass spectrometry (DE-MS) are sununarized to highlight the different information provided by each of the various analytical approaches. Case studies and examples are also presented and include a description of the molecular markers and of the molecular profiles that are used to identify the original materials. [Pg.798]
