When water is produced along with oil, the separation of water from oil invariably leaves some water in the oil. The current oil-in-water emission limit into the sea is commonly 40 ppm. Oily water disposal occurs on processing platforms, some drilling platforms, and at oil terminals. The quality of water disposed from terminals remains an area of scrutiny, especially since the terminals are often near to local habitation and leisure resorts. If the engineer can find a means of reducing the produced water at source (e.g. water shut-off or reinjection of produced water into reservoirs) then the surface handling problem is much reduced.

A ram id and polyethylene fibers are currentiy used in conveyer belts to collect valuable offshore minerals such as cobalt, uranium, and manganese. Constmction of oil-adsorbing fences made of high performance fabrics is being evaluated in Japan as well as the constmction of other pollution control textile materials for maritime use. For most marine uses, the textile materials must be resistant to biodeterioration and to a variety of aqueous pollutants and environmental conditions. 

An interesting appHcation is the study of aerosols, such as sprayed paint. A flash hologram of the paint spray at a convenient magnification records positions and sizes of the particles ia the hologram. This image can then be studied at leisure at higher magnification for size and shape of iadividual particles.

Recreational surfaces must provide certain performance characteristics with acceptable costs, lifetimes, and appearance. A major mass transit handicap is sprawling growth. The future demand for jet travel is veiy uncertain.
