Internships

In the United States, there is no national qualifying or licensing body for pharmacists. Licensure requirements are promulgated by State boards of pharmacy that administer examinations, issue internship requirements, and oversee the practice of pharmacy. The National Association of Boards of Pharmacy serves the collective needs of the state boards. This organisation has no Hcensure authority. However, it has developed a standardized Hcensure examination (NABPLEX), which as of this writing (ca 1995) is used by 48 states (see Licensing).

Ann McCampbell, M.D., is a graduate of the UCLA Medical School and became a licensed physician in California in 1979. She completed an internship in internal medicine in Santa Barbara, and practiced in the field of women s health for five years at the University of California Santa Barbara Student Health Center, and at Kaiser Permanente in the San Francisco Bay Area. Off-hours she played drums in a rock and roll band, and played competitive beach volleyball. 

Dr. Meng was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles, under the supervision of Professor Fred Wudl in 2002. Before joining DuPont Company, he pursued internship training at Lucent Technologies, Bell Laboratories under Professor Zhenan Bao (now at Stanford University) in the field of organic electronics.

Interns are regularly visited by faculty who discuss their work and progress with them and their supervisors, and maintain a continuing oversight until the internship requirement is met. Interns also submit quarterly reports on their progress. 

Perhaps the greatest value of the internship is that students often gain the opportunity to work on truly significant problems. On campus, their efforts would be limited by the ability of the campus infrastructure to address problems in a real rather than artificial manner. Arrangements would be much less flexible, and less readily adapted to meet the emerging needs of the individual. True, an on-campus base might always be seen to involve less risk and offer greater administrative convenience. However, in our experience, there is no preferred substitute for actual experience. 

An internship at Letterman Hospital in San Francisco came next. In July, I crossed the country in my recently acquired beat-up 1948 convertible Studebaker and arrived in San Francisco feeling like a courageous pioneer. I delivered 50 babies, performed two appendectomies, and spent my free time cruising the Officers Club for female companionship, which was readily available. I could hardly fcresee that in four years, my life would change dramatically and I would become a real pioneer, exploring the vast, secret world of chemical warfare at an obscure Army installation called Edgewood Arsenal.

It should be mentioned that 16 medical workers of the Center have passed the internship concerning different aspects of bone marrow transplantation in Brazil, Russia, Belorussia, Italy, Great Britain, and Japan during 2000-2005. 

The portion of this work on the vanadates has been supported by the Department of Energy, Basic Energy Sciences, Division of Chemical Sciences, and that on the heats of reoxidation by the National Science Foundation. Another option that the student should consider is completing an internship as part of the undergraduate program or summer employment in the chemical industry. Some colleges require an internship as part of their programs. There are many advantages to...

Sissi is a student of "international business administration and sinology". Due to her passion for travelling and international business she has already completed several internships at various companies located in China to gain work experience. She has been a professional figure skater for more than eight years and has also taken part in international competitions. 

Data were collected from students enrolled in three different courses. Class A was a one-semester introductory quantum mechanics course intended for junior physics majors that typically enrolled about 10 students. Class B was the second-half of a two-semester physical chemistry course for chemistry majors that typically enrolls 30-40 students. The first semester of this course focuses primarily on thermodynamics the second-half spends the first two-thirds of the semester on quantum mechanics and then concludes with a discussion of statistical mechanics. Class C is offered every semester for junior-year chemical engineering majors, and was observed three times Cl, C2, and C3. Cl and C3 were offered during the fall semester, when the mainline population of chemical engineering majors take the course and had enrollments of approximately 70 students. C2 was offered in the spring semester and is frequently taken by students who have done a "co-op" or internship in industry, which requires them to be off-campus for a semester at a time. C2 had an enrollment of around 30 students. The material in Class C is quite similar to the material offered in Class B. The first three-quarters of this class covers quantum mechanics, the remaining time is spent on statistical mechanics. 

Eline M. Sepers recently completed a Masters degree in Biomedical Science at the University of Amsterdam. Her work on this volume was undertaken during an internship with the Unit for History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Sydney.
