Scenarios are also used to hypothesize emergency conditions You arrive at the site of a fire call and find a woman in hysterics, screaming and gesticulating out of control, in the street. What do you do If you are unfamiliar with such situations, being confronted with one, even in an interview, can be stressful. And that s the point. Stress is an occupational hazard in firefighting. Questions that produce stress let the panel see firsthand how you handle it. This is one reason why many jurisdictions give preference to candidates with EMT or military experience. The ability to perform under conditions of stress is one of the key worker traits in the firefighting profession, and it is important that you develop and be prepared to demonstrate this ability. [Pg.348]

In the area of fuel cells, reliability and availability have much improved. Recent U.S. military experience with phosphoric acid fuel cells found that the mean time between failure (MTBF) was almost 1,800 h and the availability was 67%. This is comparable with the MTBF service intervals for diesel generators. These fuel cells also favorably compare with the service interval needed for a typical gas turbine generation set. Still, much more development is required to obtain a commercially viable product. Today, the typical fuel cell system still requires servicing every 3-4 days to replace its scrubber packs. [Pg.49]

Although our military experience managing toxicity from nerve agent exposure is limited, exposures to related chemicals such as the OP class occur commonly each year in the USA. In 2006, there were a total of approximately 5,400 OP exposures across the USA (Bronstein et al, 2007). OPs, such as malathion, are commonly used as pesticides. OP toxicity manifests in a similar fashion as toxicity from nerve agents however, this chemical class is considerably less toxic. One case series of 16 children who experienced poisonings with OPs confirmed that pediatric patients present with toxicity differently than adults (Lifshitz et al, 1999). These children often did not manifest the classic muscarinic effects (such as salivary secretions and diarrhea) seen in adults. [Pg.926]

Available military experience indicates that less than 5% of exposed patients die from mustard exposure, although many will reqnire a long convalescence. The most likely cause of death in severely exposed patients is massive pulmonary damage, associated with pneumonia and sepsis secondary to immunosuppression. Clues to such massive exposures include symptom onset within 4h of exposure, respiratory symptoms occurring within 6h of exposure and white blood cell counts under 200 (8). [Pg.133]

From the historical documents, the military experience at other ranges, and the fact that UXO have already been discovered on-site, unexploded and buried chemical and high-explosive ordnance is certain to remain at Spring Valley. Although quick and commendable efforts were done to check 53 key areas and to remove ordnance accidentally discovered, the... [Pg.134]

Telecommunications equipment installers and repairers usually acquire their skills through formal training at technical schools or college, where they major in electronics, communications technology, or computer science. Military experience in the field, on-the-job training with a software manufacturer, or prior work as a telecommunications line installer may also provide entry into more complicated or complex positions. [Pg.747]
