Internet usage

With the rapid growth of Internet usage and e-commerce comes an unprecedented opportunity for manufacturing enterprise to connect directly customers scattered around the world. In addition, through the Internet and business-to-business e-commerce, manufacturing enterprise can now acquire access to the most economical production capabilities on a global basis. Such connectivity provides the necessary condition for customers to become connected to the company. However, by itself it wfil not enhance effectiveness. 

According to a recent internet usage survey conducted by Nielson Ratings (www.netratings.com), there were over 182,000,000 internet users in the U.S. in 2002.

The NDT Newsgroup and other forums are playing an important role in expediting meeting and communieation among your NDT colleagues on the Internet - Email is the most important tool for that. Not only technical discussions but also business to business or even direct inquiries are today handled via the Internet. Statistics are presented with more information on specific usage. 

While professional awareness has increased, there are still hindrances to universal access in the workplace. Today almost all companies have access to the Internet, but company policy may limit usage during business hours or on company equipment Also, many countries still face prohibitive online access charges, although free market competition will take care of that in time, and Canada s no-charge policy may well be the wave of the future ... 

Since the SCADA systems sensors provided valuable information, many utilities and other industries established connections between their SCADA systems and their business system. This allowed utility/industrial management and other staff access to valuable statistics, such as chemical usage. When utilities/industries later connected their systems to the Internet, they were able to provide stakeholders/stockholders with usage statistics on the utility/industrial web pages. Figure 7.1 provides a basic illustration of a representative SCADA network. Note that firewall protection (see chapter 9) would normally be placed between the Internet and the business system and between the business system and the MTU. 

Worldwide data are not readily available as many nations do not publish the results of their animal residue monitoring programs. The best available data are those published regularly by the Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). It is possible to go back over data for many years and demonstrate improvements in the residue situation, however the records for the past few years are the important ones as they are representative of current or recent events. Since the publication of worldwide residue data is at best sparse and not consistent, this chapter has made use of the regularly published residue data from the FSIS/USDA surveys, which are available on the Internet.
