In Sweden, for example, fees paid on Ni-Cd battery purchases in Sweden far exceed the costs of a collection and recycling system. Indeed, they appear to have been imposed by the government as a punitive tax in an attempt to force Ni-Cd batteries out of the market in favor of batteries utilizing other chemistries. In this age of internet commerce and rapid mail order delivery, consumers that are given a significant monetary incentive to do so can just as easily buy their batteries outside such a program and avoid paying the punitive fee. [Pg.144]

The Internet-based economy is multilayered. It can be divided into several layers that help us in grasping the nature of the new economy. Barua et al. (1999) have identified four layers of the Internet economy in their measurement of the Internet economy indicators. The first two, Internet infrastructure and Internet applications layers, together represent the IP or Internet communications network infrastructure. These layers provide the basic technological foundation for Internet, intranet, and extranet applications. The intermediary/market maker layer fadlitates the meeting and interaction of buyers and sellers over the Internet. Through this layer, investments in the infrastructure and applications layers are transformed into business transactions. The Internet commerce layer involves the sales of products and services to consumers or businesses. According to their measurements, the Internet economy generated an estimated 301 billion in U.S. revenues and created 1.2 million jobs in 1998. Estimates of revenues and jobs contributions by each layer are presented in Table 1. [Pg.260]

Enhancements to pharmacy practice made possible by the Internet can be expressed in terms of the three C s content, communication, and commerce (Felkey and Fox, 2001). In the widely known book, Internet for Dummies, the Internet is defined as all of the computers in the world talking to all of the other computers in the world (Levine, Bauroudi, and Levine, 1996). Use of the Internet for health care purposes is growing exponentially, with well over 200 countries connected globally. [Pg.89]

Information technology and E-commerce have become increasingly important assets to the chemical industry. Spending on information technology reached 10.2 billion in 2000 and this represented a 75 percent increase over such expenditures of 1990.10 Selling via the Internet or E-commerce resulted in sales of 7.2 billion in 2000. Projections indicate that this type of business will grow rapidly and are expected to reach 150 billion by 2006. This means about one third of shipments will be via E-commerce transactions in five years. [Pg.72]

There are more marketing approaches to the customer than ever before. Because the market is new, it is well set to embrace new routes such as the internet, farmers markets and buying co-operatives. The arrival of the internet has opened up an enormous opportunity for organic farmers to market their products directly to customers, and it has enabled consumers struggling to find organic meat to locate a suitable supplier and buy direct. Search engines such as Yahoo.com can allow potential customers who key in words such as organic and meat to access any number of e-commerce sites with which to do business. [Pg.103]
