Original design

UFF was originally designed to be used without an electrostatic term. The literature accompanying one piece of software recommends using charges obtained with the Q-equilibrate method. Independent studies have found the accuracy of results to be signihcantly better without charges. 

When designing and evaluating an analytical method, we usually make three separate considerations of experimental error. First, before beginning an analysis, errors associated with each measurement are evaluated to ensure that their cumulative effect will not limit the utility of the analysis. Errors known or believed to affect the result can then be minimized. Second, during the analysis the measurement process is monitored, ensuring that it remains under control. Finally, at the end of the analysis the quality of the measurements and the result are evaluated and compared with the original design criteria. This chapter is an introduction to the sources and evaluation of errors in analytical measurements, the effect of measurement error on the result of an analysis, and the statistical analysis of data. 

The most important component of an FTIR spectrometer is an interferometer based on the original design by Michelson in 1891, as shown in Figure 3.11. 

Originally designed for the continuous filtration of conditioned sewage sludges, as were most of the filter belt presses available, the Manor Tower press is increa singly used for the treatment of paper mill sludge, coal, or flocculated clay slurries. 

ALWRs are expected to be deployed ia the United States and ia Asian counties. However, France will use improved versions of standard reactors, considering them to be amply safe and economical. The reactors were modified after the Three-Mile Island-2 (TMI-2) accident. The company Framatome that has built most of the reactors of France is associated with Babcock Wilcox ia the United States. The new Framatome 1500 MWe N4 PWR is an extension of the successful four-loop units of 1300 MWe originally designed by Westiaghouse. Full emphasis is givea to safety, ecoaomy, and rehabiUty. More severe design criteria than those ia the former model have beea adopted. 

Rifamycins. The rifamycins were first isolated from a broth of Nocardia mediterranei (the producing organism was originally identified as Streptomyces mediterranei). The rifamycins, the stmctures of which are shown in Figure 3, were originally designated as rifomycins. Only rifamycin B (22), which accounts for 10—15% of the cmde complex, can be isolated easily as a stable, crystalline compound (6,89,90). 

The Hercules viscometer was originally designed for paper and paperboard coatings, but its use has been extended to paints, adhesives, mineral slurries, emulsions, and starch solutions. The iastmment, noted for being robust and rehable, is particularly well suited for quaUty control and product formulation. The formation of hydrates downstream of the expander does not appear to be a problem in this faeility. The original design studies indieated that hydrates should not form with this pipeline gas above temperatures of 20°F. The downstream temperature was not expeeted to drop this low. In operation, the downstream temperature has been above 25°F most of the time and has not dropped below 20°F. This is with inlet temperatures normally above 65°F. There have been no indieations of hydrate formation downstream of the expander. Indeed, eleetrie power produetion has aeutually exeeeded the quantity estimated for all years of operation. 

Mechanical Drives. Mechanical drive gas turbines are widely used to drive pumps and compressors. Their application is widely used by offshore and petrochemical industrial complexes. These turbines must be operated at various speeds and thus usually have a gasifier section and a power section. These units in most cases are aero-derivative turbines, turbines, which were originally designed for aircraft application. There are some smaller frame type units, which have been converted to mechanical drive units with a gasifier and power turbine. 

In addition, the new eontrol systems inerease turbine performanee, while speed eontrol and flexibility are greatly improved. The original design has been supplemented to inelude a self-eontained alarm system, a semi-automatie sequential start system, and a eomplete trip and proteetion system, as well as the eleetronie eontrols. The eost of this system is substantially less than the eost of a similar deviee offered by the OEM on new maehines. 

We are concerned, in this discussion, with original design for reliability. Norman Lieberman s excellent book laments the dying art of process design born of field imparted discernment. We must be careful that computerized standard design methods do not produce cookie cutter unreliable plants.
