Injection molding in-mold

Also called two-shot injection molding, in-mold assembly, two-color rotary or two-color shutde. Two materials are molded so that the first molded shot is over-molded by the second molded shot first molded part is positioned so the second material can be molded around, over, sections, or through it. The two materials can be the same or different and they can be molded to bond together or not bond together. If materials are not compatible, the materials will not bond so that a product such as a universal or ball-and-socket joint can be molded in one operation. If they are compatible, controlling the processing temperature can eliminate bonding. A temperature drop at the contact surfaces can occur in relation to the second hot melt shot to prevent the bond. [Pg.331]

Polyurethane is pulverized to iacrease its bulk density, mixed with 30—80% of a thermoplastic mol ding material, gelled, and then granulated to give coated urethane foam particles 0.1 to 0.15 mm in size (48). Injection-molded articles can be decorated by in-mold labeling or by post-mold decoration. In the former method, printed film is inserted into the mold cavity before injection. Although phenoHcs have been well characterized in glass-reinforced composites, new developments continue in this area, such as new systems for Hquid-injection molding (LIM) and sheet-molding compounds (SMC). Liquid-Injection Molding. In Hquid-injection mol ding (LIM), monomers and oligomers are injected into a mold cavity where a rapid polymerization takes place to produce a thermoset article. Advantages of these processes are low cost, low pressure requirement, and flexibiHty in mold configuration. Conventional systems, such as isocyanate with polyol, release Htfle or no volatiles. The generation of substantial volatiles in the mold is obviously undesirable and has represented a significant obstacle to the development of a phenoHc-based LIM system. Because of low injection pressure, some cost savings are possible in mold and press constmction. Mol ding cycles are somewhat longer than for injection molding. The part must be cooled in the mold long enough to be able to resist swelling from internal gas pressure. In stmctural foam parts there is almost a total absence of sink marks, even in the case of unequal section thickness.
