Metal injection molding

By the 1950s P/M parts were used in postage meters and home appHances. In the 1970s P/M superaHoys for aerospace appHcations were used, followed by steel P/M forgings. The 1980s opened the way for rapid soHdification processing, P/M tool steels, and metal injection molded parts. [Pg.179]

Polyacetals have a low ceiling temperature, and are readily depolymerized by unzipping at low temperature (0.4-0.8% min at 222°C for POM). Owing to this low thermal stability, polyacetals can be used only if end-capped with stable groups (acetate or ether). This inherent thermal instability is exploited in an industrial method known as metal injection molding , which allows fine metal powder mixed with a polymer binder to be processed by injection molding, in much the same way as thermoplastic materials [31]. In a procedure based on POM, the binder is removed by thermal devolatilization according to Eq. (62)... [Pg.792]

With a new and versatile material, Hyatt and his co-workers needed equipment to mass-produce plastic products. Based on experience from metal injection molding, the Hyatt brothers built and patented the first injection molding machine in 1872, to mold cellulose materials, as well as the first blow molding machine, to manufacture hollow products. In the summer of 1869,... [Pg.8]

Metal injection molding (MIM) is a form of powder metallurgy process that is ideally suited for the production of small complex parts. Its main advantage lies in its ability to produce finished parts to net-shape, requiring little or no expensive secondary operations. Hence, it is extremely attractive for hard metals and high precision or high performance parts. [Pg.213]

The application of polymers to binder formulation for metal injection molding (MIM) has been discussed. The different classifications of binder formulations were listed and described. Rheological, thermal and mechanical properties of the feedstock was described with respect to the effects from powder loading, temperature, binder composition and binder-powder interaction. Morphology inspection by SEM was also discussed. It could reveal the state of adhesion between the powders and binders and is an important technique in the study. [Pg.277]
