Chemistry industrial

Industrial processes require large plants for the production of chemicals. [Pg.9]

Always remember that theories (models) are human inventions. They represent attempts to explain observed natural behavior in terms of human experiences. A theory is actually an educated guess. We must continue to do experiments and to refine our theories (making them consistent with new knowledge) if we hope to approach a more nearly complete understanding of nature. [Pg.9]

As scientists observe nature, they often see that the same observation applies to many different systems. For example, studies of innumerable chemical changes have shown that the total observed mass of the materials involved is the same before and after the change. Such generally observed behavior is formulated into a statement called a natural law. For example, the observation that the total mass of materials is not affected by a chemical change in those materials is called the law of conservation of mass. [Pg.9]

Note the difference between a natural law and a theory. A natural law is a summary of observed (measurable) behavior, whereas a theory is an explanation of behavior. A law summarizes what happens a theory (model) is an attempt to explain why it happens. [Pg.9]

The impact of chemistry on our lives is due in no small measure to the many industries that process and manufacture chemicals to provide the fuels, fabrics, fertilizers, food preservatives, detergents, and many other products that affect us daily. The chemical industry can be subdivided in terms of three basic types of activities  [Pg.9]

Monographs, reference books, and encyclopedias, e.g., Ullmann s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry, the Kirk-Othmer Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology, or the Encyclopedia of Computational Chemistry are included in this type of literature, which is furthest from the primary literature as concerns time and content. In most cases, tertiary literature summarizes a topic with information from different sources, and additionally evaluates the contents. [Pg.239]

In addition to the Hquid—Hquid reaction processes, there are many cases in both analytical and industrial chemistry where the main objective of separation is achieved by extraction using a chemical extractant. The technique of dissociation extraction is very valuable for separating mixtures of weakly acidic or basic organic compounds such as 2,4-dichlorophenol [120-83-2] and 2,5-dichlorophenol [583-78-8] which are difficult to separate by... [Pg.62]

The discovery that usehil chemicals could be made from coal tar provided the foundation upon which the modem chemical industry is built. Industrial chemistry expanded rapidly in the late nineteenth century in German laboratories and factories where coal-tar chemicals were refined and used in synthesis of dyes and pharmaceuticals. But coal-tar production has an eadier origin, dating back to the discovery by William Murdock in 1792 that heating coal in the absence of air generated a gas suitable for lighting. Murdock commercialized this technology, and by 1812 the streets of London were illuminated with coal gas (1). [Pg.161]

Therefore, this book is to give the analyst - whether a newcomer wishing to acquaint themself with new methods or a materials analyst needing to inform themself on methods that are not available in their own laboratory - a clue about the principles, instrumentation, and applications of the methods, techniques, and procedures of surface and thin-film analysis. The first step into this direction was the chapter Surface and Thin Film Analysis of Ullmann s Encyclopedia of Industrial Chemistry (Vol. B6, Wiley-VCH, Weinheim 2002) in which practitioners give briefly outline the methods. [Pg.348]

These advantages notwithstanding, the proportion of homogeneous catalyzed reactions in industrial chemistry is still quite low. The main reason for this is the difficulty in separating the homogeneously dissolved catalyst from the products and by-products after the reaction. Since the transition metal complexes used in homogeneous catalysis are usually quite expensive, complete catalyst recovery is crucial in a commercial situation. [Pg.218]
