Industrial chemistry, from academic

Antonio Ballada, PhD, received degrees in industrial chemistry from Milano University and in business administration from Bocconi University, both in Milano, Italy. He has held many top positions in the chemical and pharmaceutical business in Italy, USA, Taiwan, and China. He was CEO of Antibioticos SpA, and he was also responsible for the Catalyst and Additives Business Division at Basell, Inc., where he developed important relationships with the academic world involved in related R D. He is Executive Vice President of FasTech SrL, a technology company active in the elastomers and plastics industries. He is a member of the board of China Catalyst Ltd in Hong Kong and a member of the board of the Consultants Professional Association (APCO). 

With regard to application in the pharmaceutical industry, palladium-catalyzed coupling reactions offer the opportunity of shorter and more selective routes for a number of currently marketed and future drugs. Therefore, it is not surprising that since the early 1990s more and more palladium-catalyzed reactions are transferred from academic protocols to the industrial context (Beller et al. 2001 Beller and Zapf 2002 de Vries 2001). Selected examples of processes that are used nowadays or have been used in the pharmaceutical industry are shown in Scheme 3. In order to see more realizations of this type of chemistry, more active and productive palladium catalysts have to be developed because of the high price of palladium and most often the ligand system.

We hope that this text proves useful both in academic and industrial chemistry departments, and may provide the basis for productive group discussions of synthetic problems. We shall always be pleased to receive comments and suggestions from readers as to how we can improve on the concept for future volumes. 

The objective of this investigation has been to provide readers with current polymer chemistry research trends from academic, governmental, and industrial sources reported in US patents for the years 2006 to 2007. Twenty-three broad subject areas were reviewed as provided below ... 

C chemistry is a research area receiving growing attention from academic, industrial and government laboratories. Research efforts in this area arc stimulated by recent concern over present and future costs and the availability of petroleum feedstocks. 

To dress chemistry in academic garb required a community effort and, at least in 1595, the best person to lead that community seemed to be a professor at the German University of Jena named Zacharias Brendel (1553-1626). Brendel had erudition, eloquence, experience, and method. Libavius believed that, just as astronomy and logic had been reformed during his lifetime, so too could Brendel provide the fundamental principles and general precepts for constructing a logical method for chemistry. Tycho Brahe [the astronomer] is said to be the restorer of astronomy, he wrote. Why not win praise for yourself from chemistry . . . We shall piously set up a statue in honor of chemistry for you if we owe the perfection of the art to your industry (book 1, pp. 115-16).
