ACS ProSpectives Conference Process Chemistry in the Pharmaceutical Industry, Barcelona, Spain, February 24-27, 2002 14th International Symposium on Chirality, Hamburg, Germany, September 8-12, 2002. 

Georg Adolph Suckow, in his "Introduction to Economic and Technical Chemistry, described in 1784 the preparation of soda by burning certain marine plants such as Fucus vesiculosus, Chenopodium maritimum, and Salsola kali, and leaching it from the half-vitrified ashes. This industry flourished at Alicante, Spain, at Alexandria, Egypt, and along the coasts of Italy and France (47). 

With this book, I have tried to collect reviews of several aspect of the chemistry and catalytic properties of ceria and related materials which in my opinion are relevant in the future development of the field. Catalysis by ceria and related materials enjoyed contributions from industrial, academic and government laboratories from around the world (Austria, Denmark, England, France, Italy, Japan, Spain, the Netherland, U.S.A.) involved in the study of characterization and catalytic properties of ceria and Ce02-containing materials. 

Some initiatives have been carried out involving both the Association of Spanish Chemical Industries (FEIQUE) and the two main trades unions of Spain (CCOO and UGT) the Workshop on Sustainable chemistry (FEIQUE, FIA-UGT, FITEQA-CCOO, Madrid, 2005) is an example.
