Industrial chemistry awards

In addition to the Nobel Prize, Muller received an honorary doctorate from the University at Thessalonica in Greece, where DDT helped eliminate malaria, and honorary memberships in the Swiss Nature Research Society and the Paris Society of Industrial Chemistry. The list of awards is surprisingly short for someone whose discovery saved millions of lives. Its... [Pg.161]

Amination of aromatic nitro compounds is a very important process in both industry and laboratory. A simple synthesis of 4-aminodiphenyl amine (4-ADPA) has been achieved by utilizing a nucleophilic aromatic substitution. 4-ADPA is a key intermediate in the rubber chemical family of antioxidants. By means of a nucleophibc attack of the anilide anion on a nitrobenzene, a o-complex is formed first, which is then converted into 4-nitrosodiphenylamine and 4-nitrodiphenylamine by intra- and intermolecular oxidation. Catalytic hydrogenation finally affords 4-ADPA. Azobenzene, which is formed as a by-product, can be hydrogenated to aniline and thus recycled into the process. Switching this new atom-economy route allows for a dramatic reduction of chemical waste (Scheme 9.9).73 The United States Environmental Protection Agency gave the Green Chemistry Award for this process in 1998.74... [Pg.316]

The scope and depth of his work is reflected by the numerous awards he received, among them the Eugene H. Houdry Award in Applied Catalysis, the Chemical Pioneer Award, and the following American Chemical Society awards The Fritzsche Award for his contributions to terpene chemistry, the Petroleum Chemistry Award, and the E. V. Murphree Award in Industrial and Engineering Chemistry. [Pg.446]

In 1915, she entered the world of industrial chemistry, being hired to work at His Majesty s Factory in Litherland, Liverpool, a position that she obtained as a result of the call-up for military duty of the male research chemists. Her initial rank was that of Research Chemist, but in 1916 she was promoted to Chemist in Charge of Laboratory, a very high position for a woman at that time. Her research involved the elucidation of the pathway in the formation of nitric acid and the determination of the optimum industrial conditions for the process. This work was vital for the munitions industry, which required massive quantities of nitric acid for explosives production. In June 1917, the Litherland factory closed00 and Leslie was transferred with the same rank to the H.M. Factory in Penrhyndeudraeth, North Wales. Leslie was awarded a D.Sc. degree in 1918 by the University of Leeds, mainly in recognition of her contribution to the war effort. [Pg.189]

Perkin Medal.— The American Society of Chemical Industry established a medal known as The Perkin Medal the first impression of which was presented to Sir Wm. Perkin in person. The medal is now awarded annually to the American chemist who has contributed the most important work on industrial chemistry. The men who have been awarded the medal, up to 1921, are the following ... [Pg.745]

Indian Chemical Manufacturers Association (Bombay) Award for the Most Outstanding Example of Forward Development of Technology in Industrial Chemistry in India... [Pg.187]

This enormous diversity led to one major consequence although many of these schools or programs awarded the title of ingenieur chimiste, the meaning and value to be ascribed to this title was very difficult to ascertain. As late as 1925, a well-informed observer of French industrial chemistry could write ... [Pg.60]

The Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan in 2003 awarded The Third Green and Sustainable Chemistry Award to Prof Ishii and the Daicel Chemical Company for their relevant efforts to the development of NHPI-based industrial processes with low environmental impact. [Pg.258]
