Corrosion. Anticorrosion measures have become standard ia pipeline desiga, coastmctioa, and maintenance ia the oil and gas iadustries the principal measures are appHcation of corrosion-preventive coatings and cathodic protection for exterior protection and chemical additives for iaterior protectioa. Pipe for pipelines may be bought with a variety of coatiags, such as tar, fiber glass, felt and heavy paper, epoxy, polyethylene, etc, either pre-apphed or coated and wrapped on the job with special machines as the pipe is lowered iato the treach. An electric detector is used to determine if a coatiag gap (hoHday) exists bare spots are coated before the pipe is laid (see Corrosion and corrosion control). [Pg.50]

This process uses coUated signatures that ate sewn on special machines which pass thread through the folds of each signature and ate knotted at the back Glue is appHed to the spine and hard covets ate attached. Finished books ate then dried in special hydraulic presses. [Pg.56]

People who go in for expensive cocktails like to cool them with ice cubes which are crystal clear - it adds to the aura of bejewelled, refreshing purity. Unfortunately, ice cubes grown in an ordinary fridge are cloudy. So establishments which cater for upmarket clients install special machines to make clear ice. [Pg.41]

Special machine best approach. Otherwise complex programming of all motions of helical machine required. [Pg.519]

Modem machining deals with an increasingly wide range of materials which includes, in addition to the traditional metals, high-chromium and nickel stainless steels, titanium, intermetallics, refractory metals, ceramics, glasses, fiber-reinforced composites, and many others. These materials have widely different properties. They react differently to machining and each presents a special machining problem. [Pg.453]

Multiple-shot overmolding process uses a specialized machine with multiple plastic processing barrels and a set of pivoting molds. In this process, the substrate on which TPEs are injected are thermoplastic in nature. [Pg.147]

Glass surfaces which must fit closely are usually ground to shape. The most common example is the cone-and-socket joint the surfaces are first worked to an approximate fit with fairly coarse carborundum (about 100 mesh) which is put between them and wetted. The cone is rotated by hand or in a lathe or drill chuck, or by a special machine, until the smfaces meet closely—the carborundum must be kept moist all the time. The coarse abrasive is then washed off, and the grinding continued a number of times with progressively finer abrasive. Various possible abrasives are mentioned on p. 39. [Pg.46]

PTFE sintering, pressing, ram or paste extrusion, compression moulding or isostatic moulding, machining, hot stamping, extrusion of pre-sintered powders on special machines. [Pg.480]

Joints of all sizes may be made with heat fusion techniques. Fused joints may be made with either electrofusion or conventional heat fusion. Electrofusion joints are made with fittings which have embedded heating wires. Conventional fusion joints are made with special machines which trim the pipe ends, apply heat, and then force them together to form a bond. Consult the manufacturer regarding the sizes for which electrofusion fittings are available. [Pg.106]

Biofeedback uses a special machine and sensors to record muscle contractions and skin temperature. The machine can tell the person what affect his or her concentration is having on things like blood flow and body temperature. Eventually, the person can recognize and manage these responses on his or her own. [Pg.104]

First Period, Before the Introduction of the Gun In this period of incendiary warfare, incendiaries were thrown first by hand and later by special machines, called catapults and ballistae. [Pg.330]

Short fibre cotton, 10-20 mm in length, known as linters, which is the nap remaining on the surface of the cotton seeds after the long fibres of cotton destined for spinning have been separated. Short cotton fibres are separated from the seed by special machines and compressed into bales so as to reduce the bulk of the product to be sent for purification. [Pg.362]

In Great Britain, according to the patents of Picton [6] small flakes of sheet wood-cellulose have been nitrated, while in the United States shredded cellulose prepared by the Stem method [7] was most widely used (shreds made of loosely felted cellulose fibres in a special machine). This last form of cellulose is especially suitable for uniform penetration and imbibition of the nitrating acid. Normal nitrators, as used for linters, are also suitable for nitrating this type of cellulose. [Pg.367]

All the beets are now halved or quartered by cutting lengthwise, the half or quarter of each root being reduced to pulp by means of a grater or, better, a special machine. A very fine pulp may be obtained from beets already coarsely cut up by presses such as Pellet s Sans Paratte. ... [Pg.123]

Lime stone and clay are mixed in correct proportions. This mixture is crushed to powder in a rotating cylinder. The powder is heated in a special rotating kiln to a very high temperature. The mixture forms lumps. The lumps are called clinkers. Clinkers are cooled and mixed with gypsum. The mixture is ground to a fine powder in special machines. The quality of cement depends upon its fineness. [Pg.90]

One of the strangest transition metals in modern medicine is technetium, which does not exist on Earth naturally. Its half-life, or the time that it takes for half of a sample of the element to break down, is so short that all the technetium created when the Earth formed has already disappeared. But scientists have found a way to bring it back from the dead. When an isotope of the element molybdenum—another transition metal—breaks down, it turns into an isotope of technetium that lasts for about 6 hours. The technetium isotope latches on to certain kinds of heart muscle and can be seen in the muscle with special machines, similar to an X-ray. [Pg.52]

Stock, cable, and top can be dyed on special machines according to the pad steam process [172], preferably with pressurized steam at temperatures above 100°C to obtain short fixing times. To avoid drying and condensed water spots, the steam should be neither superheated nor wet. A typical pad liquor contains acetic acid (pH 4.5) and dye solvent in addition to steam-resistant, readily water soluble cationic dyes (usually liquid brands) [173],... [Pg.417]

Repeated tumbling in sawdust removes unwanted residue. A final glazing, ironing, or spraying with a chemical and air blowing puts a sheen on the finished fur. The wool of sheep and other skins with dull and crimped hair can be stretched and made more lustrous by ironing on a special machine. It is brushed with water and some acetic acid and alcohol then ironed for a short time at ca. 200 °C. [Pg.449]

Commercial laundry and commercial dishwashing, in which speciality machines may require speciality detergents. Even dry-cleaning may require detergent stain removers. [Pg.291]

The specialized machine used to perform a standardized test method for measuring the effectiveness of detergents. The degree to which reference soils are washed from standard fabric swatches in the presence of detergents and under specified conditions is determined. See also Detergent, Detergency. [Pg.380]

Hemoperfusion The process by which a drug is removed from the blood of a poisoned patient by allowing it to be absorbed by activated charcoal or a resin while the blood is pumped through a special machine. [Pg.384]

Figure 2.17 illustrates another example of a highly specialized machine from the pioneering period. Produced around 1955, it has a degressive pitch in the transport direction, which, surprisingly, was cut from the solid feedstock. [Pg.20]

Though material costs are usually negligible, to date the cost of specialized machines, molds, and secondary equipment makes micromolding an expensive process when compared to larger fabricated products. [Pg.218]

The newest development for production is a machine which fills the dies by centrifugal force [34], It is a special rotary tableting machine. Another innovation is a special machine which operates by ultrasound [37]. [Pg.1058]
