Figure 8.1 Exploded view of an electrophoresis cell. The components of the Bio-Rad Mini-PROTEAN 3 are shown. The inner chamber can hold one or two gels. It contains an electrode assembly and a clamping frame. The interior of the inner assembly constitutes the upper buffer compartment (usually the cathode compartment). The chamber is placed in the tank to which buffer is added. This constitutes the lower (anode) buffer compartment. Electrical contact is made through the lid.

In the thermoforming process, the sheet is heated to slightly above Tm or Tg and is placed in a clamp frame that clamps it along the part perimeter. The deformable sheet is then forced to conform to the shape of a mold by means of vacuum, air or gas pressure, or a plunger. There are thus three distinct categories of thermoforming ... 

Steel clamping frames should be nickel-copper-chrome-plated to reflect heat to sheet edges. After 6 months use, consider replacing side and back reflectors in order to regain 4 to 8 percent efficiency.

For applicable processes, see that the clamping frame does not interfere with mold closing.

Straight vacuum forming (Fig. 10-8) can be done with either male or female molds, as well as with a double clamping frame. It is used for rigid materials. 

A mold-mounting table with a clamping frame above it to hold the sheet. Both the moldmounting table and the clamping frame should move in both up and down directions. 

These basic units—i.e., heater, mold-mounting table, sheet-clamping frame, and vacuum or pressure sources—are contained in every piece of thermoforming equipment however, for highspeed continuous production, many improvements have been made. 

Change sharp edges on the clamping frame to roundings (inserts), and... 

If the fixed format base is too high, the upper clamping frame of the machine is not able to press the cold material against the seal f4 in the lower clamping frame. This means that the height of the fixed format base should not exceed the clamping level (seal f4).

Figure 1.223 shows a metal stamp forming mold for sandwich forming with a clamping frame and a transformed component. Due to the compressibility of the core material, higher density deviations in the top layers can be tolerated, and local thickening can subsequently be integrated into the component concept without any mold modifications.
