For target selection, adhesion molecules are expressed on the surface of endothelial cells. For this purpose, sialyl Lewis X is used as the guide molecule in the case of expression of P- and E-selectins for TNFa-activated HUVEC (human umbilical vein endothelial cells). Thus, targeting membrane-bound antigens in situ is also possible with this technique.

Ceratonia siliqua L. (Fabaceae) EO was tested for its cytotoxic effects on Hela, MCF-7 and HUVEC (human umbilical vein endothelial) cells using the MTT test. The EO exhibited, dose dependently, growth inhibition effects on all tested cell lines, but inhibition was signi cantly stronger in Hela cells than in MCF-7 cells. It also showed lower cytotoxic activity against normal human cells (HUVEC) (Hsouna et al., 2011). 

Subsequently, through culture of the same fungus, Periconia byssoides, collected from the same mollusk, Aplysia kurodai, the same team isolated a series of irregular sesquiterpenes, peribysins A-D, which are inhibitors of cell adhesion of HL-60 (human leukemia) on HUVECs (human umbilical vein endothelial cells) and could be useful for the treatment of metastasis. Peribysin D is 380 times more active than herbimycin A, which is used as a standard (Yamada et al., 2004).
