Growth-inhibiting effect

Microbiol Stability. Microbial growth is hindered by reducing water activity and adding preservatives. An overview is available (30). Reduction in water activity is typically obtained by including approximately 50% of a polyalcohol such as sorbitol or glycerol. Furthermore, 20% of a salt like NaCl has a pronounced growth inhibiting effect. 

Coumarin, the lactone of o-hydroxycinnamic acid, and some of its derivatives have been isolated from many plant species 31). Thimann and Bonner 141) attributed the growth-inhibiting effects of coumarin to its action on enzyme sulfhydryl groups. Inhibitory effects of coumarin on Avena coleoptiles and pea stem sections could be overcome by 2,3-dimercaptopropanol (BAL). Coumarin has also been reported to disrupt mitosis 29,30).

PolyPs display antiseptic, cytoprotective and antiviral activities. At a concentration of 0.1 % or higher, PolyP had a bacteriocidal effect on log arithmic-phase Bacillus cereus cells (Maier et al., 1999). The growth inhibition effect of PolyP was observed with Staphylococcus aureus (Jen and Shelef, 1986 Matsuoka et al., 1995) and Aerornonas hydrophila (Palumbo et al., 1995).

Certain strains of bacteria are resistant to the lytic properties of penicillins but remain. su.sccptible to their growth-inhibiting effects. Thus, the action of the antibiotic has been converted from bactericidal to bacteriostatic. This mechanism of resistance is termed tolerance and apparently results from impaired autolysin activity in the bacterium.
