Hookworms

The two most common hookworms in humans are Jincylostoma duodenale and JSlecator americanus. M. duodenale adult worms are 8—13 mm in length. [Pg.245]

American hookworm (N. americanus) adult worms, 7—11 mm in length, may Hve up to 15 years. The life cycle of the N. americanus is similar to M. duodenale except that N. americanus requires a pulmonary migration with development in the lungs before it can develop to the adult worm in the intestine. [Pg.245]

Pyrantel Pamoate. This dmg (10), C24H2qN20 S, cures pinworm infections and is close to 100% effective against A.scaris when given in a single dose (28,29). Pyrantel pamoate is also a principal dmg for the treatment of hookworm infections thus it is useful in patients with mixed worm infections. [Pg.246]

For hookworms, treatment is continued for three days. In roundworms, muscle tissue is stimulated continuously, resulting in spastic paralysis. The dmg was introduced in veterinary medicine in 1966 and then appHed to clinical medicine three years later. [Pg.246]

Although more people are being fed than ever before, there are also more malnourished humans than ever before. Thus, more than 1.6 billion of the 5.3 billion people living today are malnourished and do not have access to adequate supplies of food (3), Clearly, a malnourished person cannot lead a fully productive life. The plight of these people is more serious than just a lack of adequate food, for many are ill with disease and/or carry heavy loads of parasites. For example, a survey of school children in Kwale District, Kenya showed that 96% were infected with hookworms, 50% with roundworms, 95% with whipworms, and 40% with schistosomiasis... [Pg.309]

The drug of choice for nematode infestations (hookworm, enterobiasis, and ascariasis) is mebendazole, while ivermectin is indicated for strongyloidiasis and praziquantel is indicated for tapeworms. [Pg.1139]

Hookworm infection is caused by Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus. N. americanus is found in the southeastern United States. Infective larvae enter the host in contaminated food or water or penetrate the skin and migrate to the small intestine. The adult worm attaches to gastrointestinal mucosa and causes injury by lytic destruction of the tissue. Over a period of time, the adult worm can cause anemia and hypopro-teinemia in the host. [Pg.1143]

Anaerobic processes that produce methane from waste solve 2 problems at once waste and energy. Anaerobic processes provide some of the simplest and most practical methods for minimizing public health hazards from human and animal wastes. Pathogens such as schistosome eggs, hookworm, flat/tape worm, dysentery Bacillus, poliovirus, Salmonella, and... [Pg.47]

Larval maturation studies, sometimes referred to as cultures, can be performed on fecal specimens applied to wet filter paper. Nematode larvae such as Strongyloides spp. or hookworm mature to the filariform stages in the culture container and migrate from feces into water, where they are detected microscopically. The procedure can be performed in a petri dish with a square of filter paper or in a large test tube with a strip of filter paper. [Pg.24]

Examine the specimen on days 3, 5, and 7. Strongyloides filariform larvae are found on days 2 and 3, and hookworm larvae are found on days 5 through 7. Larvae are identified by their morphological characteristics. [Pg.25]

Small nematodes may also be cleared in carbolxylene or beech-wood creosote and mounted in permount or balsam. This method is particularly good for hookworm adults. [Pg.25]

A prominently expressed gene family in many parasitic nematodes bears similarity to allergens present in vespid (e.g. wasp) venom. For example, the canine hookworm Ancylostoma caninum expresses high levels of this protein when larvae are activated to invade (Hawdon et al., 1996). Similar genes are found in B. malayi (R.M. Maizels and J. Murray, 1999,... [Pg.248]
