PDI isoforms have also been described in parasitic nematodes, including 0. volvulus (Wilson et al., 1994), Nippostrongylus brasiliensis (Tweedie et al., 1993), Ancylostoma caninum (Epe et al., 1998) and Dirofilaria immitis (Chandrashekar et al., 1998). However, their involvement in collagenfolding events in the respective organisms remains to be determined. [Pg.190]

A prominently expressed gene family in many parasitic nematodes bears similarity to allergens present in vespid (e.g. wasp) venom. For example, the canine hookworm Ancylostoma caninum expresses high levels of this protein when larvae are activated to invade (Hawdon et al., 1996). Similar genes are found in B. malayi (R.M. Maizels and J. Murray, 1999,... [Pg.248]

Considerably more is known about anticoagulants from the blood-feeding hookworm, Ancylostoma caninum. Several families of small, anti-clotting peptides have been described in A. caninum. AcAP, an 8.7 kDa peptide secreted by adult worms that does not exhibit homology to other anticoagulants, but is a potent inhibitor of Factor Xa, was described by Cappello et at. (1995). A family of related peptides, one of which uniquely inhibited a complex of blood coagulation factor VIIA and tissue factor, was also reported (Stanssens et al., 1996). [Pg.352]

Creeping eruption or larva migrans in man is caused by the presence of the larvae of dog and cat hookworms, Ancylostoma caninum and A. braziliense in the skin. Some other nematodes like Uncimria stenocephala (European dog hookworm) and Gnathostoma spitiigerum also produce somewhat similar cutaneous lesions. The creeping eruption is prevalent in different regions of the warm climates, especially in the Americas, Africa and Asia. It is estimated that nearly 10 million people around the world suffer from this disease [24]. [Pg.8]

Nitroscanate exhibits 99.6-99.8% activity against the hookworm, Ancylostoma caninum in dogs at a single oral dose of 50 mg/kg. However, it has no action against Trichuris vulpis [62,64]. [Pg.265]
