Pinworm infection

Pyrantel Pamoate. This dmg (10), C24H2qN20 S, cures pinworm infections and is close to 100% effective against A.scaris when given in a single dose (28,29). Pyrantel pamoate is also a principal dmg for the treatment of hookworm infections thus it is useful in patients with mixed worm infections. [Pg.246]

When a pinworm infection is suspected, the nurse takes a specimen from the anal area, preferably early in the morning before the patient gets out of bed. Specimens are taken by swabbing the perianal area with a cellophane tape swab. [Pg.140]

Enterobiasis, or pinworm infection, is caused by Enterobius vermicularis. It is the most widely distributed helminthic infection in the world. There are approximately 42 million cases in the United States, primarily affecting children. The most common manifestation of the infection is cutaneous irritation... [Pg.1143]

Mebendazole is indicated for use in ascariasis, trichuriasis, hookworm and pinworm infections, and certain other helminthic infections. It can be taken before or after meals the tablets should be chewed before swallowing. For pinworm infection, the dose is 100 mg once, repeated at 2 weeks. For ascariasis, trichuriasis, hookworm, and trichostrongylus infections, a... [Pg.1151]

Antihelminthics (pinworm infection) Pyrantel pamoate, 11 mg/ kg (maximum 1 g) Pin-X, Reese s Pinworm Treat all members of the household. Consult physician for children < 2 years of age or < 25 lb. Undergarments, pajamas, and linens should be washed daily until the infection is resolved. If symptoms persist beyond 2 weeks, contact a physician to determine if a repeat dose is indicated. [Pg.1343]

For adults and children over 2 years of age, the treatment is a single dose of 400 mg orally (repeated for 2-3 days for heavy ascaris infections and in 2 weeks for pinworm infections). These treatments achieve high cure rates for these roundworm infections and marked reduction in egg counts in those not cured. [Pg.1224]

In the USA, mebendazole has been approved for use in ascariasis, trichuriasis, and hookworm and pinworm infection. It can be taken before or after meals the tablets should be chewed before swallowing. For pinworm infection, the dose is 100 mg once, repeated at 2 weeks. For ascariasis, trichuriasis, hookworm, and trichostrongylus infections, a dosage of 100 mg twice daily for 3 days is used for adults and for children over 2 years of age. Cure rates are 90-100% for pinworm infections, ascariasis, and trichuriasis. Cure rates are lower for hookworm infections, but a marked reduction in the worm burden occurs in those not cured. For intestinal capillariasis, mebendazole is used at a dosage of 400 mg/d in divided doses for 21 or more days. In trichinosis, limited reports suggest efficacy against adult worms in the intestinal tract and tissue larvae. Treatment is three times daily, with fatty foods, at 200-400 mg per dose for 3 days and then 400-500 mg per dose for 10 days. Corticosteroids should be coadministered for severe infections. [Pg.1229]

Piperazine is also a drug of choice for treating pinworm infections in children and adults. A dose of 2-2.5 g of piperazine given daily for 14 days gives nearly 100% cures, while a dose of 50-75 mg/kg (maximum 0.5-3g) of piperazine citrate given for 7-14 days produces 85-100% elimination of . vermicularis in man with little or no toxicity [52-54,56,57]. Piperazine and its salts show poor activity against whipworms, Trichuris trichiura in man [63,64]. [Pg.158]

The most effective method of diagnosing pinworm infections is by the use of perianal swab using adhesive Scotch tape. The Scotch tape, which is applied to the perianal region with a tongue depressor, is examined microscopically for eggs. ... [Pg.2075]

Piperazine (single dose of 3.5 g for two consecutive days) is indicated in the treatment of enterobiasis (pinworm infection) and ascariasis (roundworm infection). [Pg.575]

Pyrantel, a pyrimidine derivative with antihehnintic properties (single dose of 11 mg/kg p.o.), is used in the treatment of roundworm and pinworm infections. [Pg.605]

Pyrantel pamoate is used in products that treat pinworm infections. [Pg.297]

The medically important intestinal nematodes responsive to drug therapy include Enterobius vermic-ularis (pinworm), Trichuris trichiuria (whipworm), Ascaris lumbricoides (roundworm), ancy-clostoma and necator species (hookworms), and Strongyloides stercoralis (threadworm). Over one billion persons worldwide are estimated to be infected by intestinal nematodes. Pinworm infections... [Pg.468]

Pyrantel pamoate is equivalent to mebendazole in the treatment of pinworm infections, but it is not effective in the treatment of infections caused by cestodes. The answer is (D). [Pg.475]

In general, piperazine and a good munber of its salts e.g., adipate, calcium edetate, citrate, phosphate and tartrate— have been employed profusely in therapeutic treatment of roundworm and pinworm infections. Piperazine itself is a representative example of this class of compoimds ... [Pg.654]
