Consider Fig. 16.24a, which shows the network design from Fig. 16.7 but with a loop highlighted. Heat can be shifted around loops. Figure 16.24a shows the effect of shifting heat duty U around the loop. In this loop, heat duty U is simply moved from unit E to unit B. [Pg.390]

They are classified apart in this text because their use differs from that of petroleum solvents they are used as raw materials for petrochemicals, particularly as feeds to steam crackers. Naphthas are thus industrial intermediates and not consumer products. Consequently, naphthas are not subject to governmental specifications, but only to commercial specifications that are re-negotiated for each contract. Nevertheless, naphthas are in a relatively homogeneous class and represent a large enough tonnage so that the best known properties to be highlighted here. [Pg.275]

First of all, one should note that refining a low cost raw material into low or medium added value products requires extremely delicate optimization. It is out of the question to give them much more than the specifications require thus highlighting the importance of being able to predict the various product yields and qualities that a given crude oil can supply. A profound understanding of crude oils appears therefore indispensable. That is the role of crude oil analysis, an operation traced in part to refining, with the... [Pg.485]

The benefit of using the decision tree approach is that it clarifies the decision-making process. The discipline required to construct a logical decision tree may also serve to explain the key decisions and to highlight uncertainties. [Pg.181]

In order to test the economic performance of the project to variations in the base case estimates for the input data, sensitivity analysis is performed. This shows how robust the project is to variations in one or more parameters, and also highlights which of the inputs the project economics is more sensitive to. These inputs can then be addressed more specifically. For example if the project economics is highly sensitive to a delay in first production, then the scheduling should be more critically reviewed. [Pg.325]

Fourier transform is widely used for signal analysis purposes and is satisfactory when applied to signals where stationary features are of particular interest. However, it turns out to be very poor when dealing with defect detection, where it is the non stationary characteristics of the signal which has to be highlighted. The main reason is that in the Fourier analysis, the time parameter is discarded. [Pg.360]

The sealing rule lies to the left of the pipe and the defect zone is highlighted by the white arrow. Figure 6. A number of controls are provided to enable the user to tailor the colour, scale and orientation of the displayed image to highlight details of interest. Two types of colour map are available. The Default colour map is a cold-to-hot scheme in which with cold colours such as blue used for low amplitudes and hot colours such as red, yellow and white used for high amplitudes. The Mono colour map uses intensities of red, from black upwards, to indicate increasing amplitude. [Pg.771]

This presentation will highlight some NDT applications whereby NDT can be transformed from a "necessary evil" into a situation that is "of beneficial value" to the user. From an activity that has to be done because it is required by the code, to a solution to a problem that can improve safety, enhance quality and save money. [Pg.945]

Examples will cover maintenance inspection such as corrosion detection in piping and tanks, but also routine weld inspection. The need for acceptance criteria for weld defects adapted for modern NDT techniques will be highlighted, because these form (in many cases) the key to benefit. [Pg.945]

In the last three years many NDT organizations have set up Websites to provide information, the highlights of which are reviewed in this paper. The overwhelming amount of information makes it very difficult to find the most useful information on a specific theme in a reasonable time for - some hints on how to solve that problem are offered. [Pg.972]

The results of corrosion surveys are received by the Surveyor in an agreed format using Forms TMl - TM8, preferably with the LR software freely issued to the approved firms. The report will highlight any areas where corrosion has gone beyond the permitted maximum diminution, which may be as low as 15% of the nominal thickness for a single item, and will also identify areas of "substantial corrosion T.e., any in excess of 75% of the permitted maximum. Corrosion in excess of that permitted means that the item has to be replaced. Any areas of corrosion deemed to be "substantial" are recorded for annual inspection. The Surveyor will review the completed report for verification and confirmation of the completeness of the thickness survey. [Pg.1051]

Proteins, like other macromolecules, can be made into monolayers at the air-water interface either by spreading, adsorption, or specific binding. Proteins, while complex polymers, are interesting because of their inherent surface activity and amphiphilicity. There is an increasing body of literature on proteins at liquid interfaces, and here we only briefly discuss a few highlights. [Pg.542]

A huge variety of model colloids have been studied. In this section we will highlight a few of these, of particular interest to the discussion of concentrated suspensions in section C2.6.6. [Pg.2668]

Even when well defined model systems are used, colloids are ratlier complex, when compared witli pure molecular compounds, for instance. As a result, one often has to resort to a wide range of characterization teclmiques to obtain a sufficiently comprehensive description of a sample being studied. This section lists some of tire most common teclmiques used for studying colloidal suspensions. Some of tliese teclmiques are discussed in detail elsewhere in tliis volume and will only be mentioned in passing. A few teclmiques tliat are relevant more specifically for colloids are introduced very briefly here, and a few advanced teclmiques are highlighted. [Pg.2671]
