Enhanced quality

This presentation will highlight some NDT applications whereby NDT can be transformed from a "necessary evil" into a situation that is "of beneficial value" to the user. From an activity that has to be done because it is required by the code, to a solution to a problem that can improve safety, enhance quality and save money. 

If you do not take this approach, then your competitor will take the cost reduction approach. VA is not exclusively a cost-cutting discipline. With VA you literally can do it all that includes reduce cost, enhance quality, and/or boost productivity. 

In the 1990s the U.S. methanol industry was producing almost 4 million gallons of methanol per day. Only a third of this was used as fuel for transportation and much of it was converted to MTBE. Methanol is also popular in high-performance racing because of its octane-enhancing qualities. 

Explanation- driven expert system building leads to robust systems. Another significant benefit of a LIMS is the improvement of the overall quality of the laboratory. In the case of a laboratory, quality is defined as satisfying customer needs in the areas of accuracy, reliability, clarity, and timeliness of analytical information. LIMS can enhance quality in a number of ways, eg, in checking conformance to requirements, in organising and prioritizing work to ensure timeliness, in measuring laboratory performance in areas of technical quality and efficiency so as to provide continuous improvement, and in helping the laboratory to communicate deady, completely, and consistendy (16). 

With such cooperation, mutual support and obviously some "luck" (23), plant growth regulators, including abscission agents, may still be expected to be developed (24, 25) not only to enhance quality and yields of major crops e.g., cotton, corn, tobacco, but also important fruit crops e.g., apples, oranges (citrus), grapes, cherries, etc. 

In this context it is worth taking a brief look at the question of flavour enhancing qualities of glutamate, generally substances of the UMAMI-type as described by Shizuko Yamaguchi in her contribution to this symposium.

Over 1200 years ago, Asian cooks began adding a type of seaweed found in the Pacific Ocean to their soup stocks. They had discovered that foods cooked in this seaweed broth simply tasted better. What these chefs did not know was that the broth s unique flavour enhancement quality was due to the high levels of naturally occurring glutamate in the seaweed. Finally, in 1908, the link between glutamate and the seaweed was discovered. Professor Kikunae Ikeda, at Tokyo Imperial University, isolated MSG from the seaweed and unlocked the secret of the plant s flavourenhancing properties. 

As a result of enhanced quality awareness and standards, great efforts are currently being made to ensure the prevention of economic damage, due to the multiplication of bacteria in foodstuffs, through the application of selected processes.
