High-density polyethylene products

Mention may also be made of an application in which careful control of polymer morphology has led to the production of novel materials. By treatment of solutions of high-density polyethylene, products are obtained with a celluloselike morphology and which are known as, fibrides or synthetic wood pulp. They are used for finishing paper and special boards to impart such features as sealability and improved wet strength. They are also reported to be used for such diverse applications as tile adhesives, thixotropic agents, battery separators and teabags ... 

Supported CrC>3 catalysts, referred to as Phillips catalysts, are important industrial catalysts and are employed in high-density polyethylene production. Phillips catalysts polymerise ethylene with an induction period, which has been ascribed to the slow reduction of Cr(VI) by the monomer and to the displacement of oxidation products (mainly formaldehyde) from the catalytic species [226]. The prereduction of the catalyst with the use of H2 or CO enables the induction period to be eliminated. Active sites thus formed involve surface low-valence Cr(II) and Cr(III) centres, which can appear as mononuclear (formed from chromate species) and binuclear (formed from dichromate species) [227-232],... 

MYKON HD emulsion provides excellent sewing properties while imparting a soft hand to treated fabrics—unlike the waxy hand of other high density polyethylene products. MYKON HD softener also improves tear strength and abrasion resistance of treated fabric. 

Table 6 shows the sales estimates for principal film and sheet products for the year 1990 (14). Low density polyethylene films dominate the market in volume, followed by polystyrene and the vinyls. High density polyethylene, poly(ethylene terephthalate), and polypropylene are close in market share and complete the primary products. A number of specialty resins are used to produce 25,000—100,000 t of film or sheet, and then there are a large number of high priced, high performance materials that serve niche markets. The original clear film product, ceUophane, has faUen to about 25,000 t in the United States, with only one domestic producer. There are three basic types of polyethylene foams of importance (/) extmded foams from low density polyethylene (LPDE) (2) foam products from high density polyethylene (HDPE) and (J) cross-linked polyethylene foams. Other polyolefin foams have an insignificant volume as compared to polyethylene foams and most of their uses are as resia extenders. 

High density polyethylene (HDPE) is defined by ASTM D1248-84 as a product of ethylene polymerisation with a density of 0.940 g/cm or higher. This range includes both homopolymers of ethylene and its copolymers with small amounts of a-olefins. The first commercial processes for HDPE manufacture were developed in the early 1950s and utilised a variety of transition-metal polymerisation catalysts based on molybdenum (1), chromium (2,3), and titanium (4). Commercial production of HDPE was started in 1956 in the United States by Phillips Petroleum Company and in Europe by Hoechst (5). HDPE is one of the largest volume commodity plastics produced in the world, with a worldwide capacity in 1994 of over 14 x 10 t/yr and a 32% share of the total polyethylene production. 

EiaaHy, a new aluminum fire-resistant paneling consists of a composite design that iacludes a soHd thermoplastic compound core covered with a high density polyethylene adhesive film and an aluminum skin. The product is easily formable. It has sound deadening abiHties, and an optional poly(vinyHdene fluoride) resia coatiag provides damage resistance. 

Chloroformates are shipped in nonretumable 208-L (55-gal) polyethylene dmms with carbon steel overpacks or high density polyethylene dmms. Eor bulk shipments, insulated stainless-steel tank containers and tmcks provide secure protection. Tank tmck and rail car quantities are shipped using equipment dedicated for these types of products. Materials such as isopropyl chloroformate, benzyl chloroformate, and j -butyl chloroformate that require refrigeration are precooled when shipped in bulk containers. Bulk shipments that are precooled must proceed to the destination without layover. Dmm shipments of IPCE, BCE, and SBCE must be shipped in refrigerated containers. Many of the chloroformates are only shipped in tmck load shipments. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations control the shipments of chloroformates, as described in Table 3. 

A somewhat different approach to the production of thermoplastic polyolefin rubbers has been adopted by Allied Chemical with their ET polymers. With these materials butyl rubber is grafted on to polyethylene chains using a phenolic material such as brominated hydroxymethyl phenol. The initial grades of these polymers, which were introduced commercially towards the end of the 1970s, had polyethylene butyl rubber ratios of 50 50 and 75 25. Both low-density and high-density polyethylene-based varieties were produced. 

Leaving aside rayon and artificial silks generally, the first really effective polymeric textile fibre was nylon, discovered by the chemist Wallace Hume Carothers (1896-1937) in the Du Pont research laboratories in America in 1935, and first put into production in 1940, just in time to make parachutes for the wartime forces. This was the first of several major commodity polymer fibres and, together with high-density polyethylene introduced about the same time and Terylene , polyethylene tereph-thalate, introduced in 1941 (the American version is Dacron), transformed the place of polymers in the materials pantheon.

High-pressure polymerization of ethylene was introduced in the 1930s. Currently, high density polyethylene is the largest-volume thermoplastic. The 1997 U.S. production of HDPE was 12.5 billion pounds. LDPE was 7.7 billion pounds and LLDPE was 6.9 billion pounds. 

The metal catalyzed production of polyolefins such as high density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) and polypropylene (PP) has grown into an enormous industry. Heterogeneous transition metal catalysts are used for the vast majority of PE and all of the PP production. These catalysts fall generally within two broad classes. Most commercial PP is isotactic and is produced with a catalyst based on a combination of titanium chloride and alkylaluminum chlorides. HDPE and LLDPE are produced with either a titanium catalyst or one based on chromium supported on silica. Most commercial titanium-based PE catalysts are supported on MgCl2. 

Storage stability Store DF in lead and wax-lined carboys, high-density polyethylene bottles, or nickel-lined containers in well-ventilated areas. Never store DF with alcohols DF will react with alcohols to form lethal chemicals, such as crude GB. Incompatible with water, glass, concrete, most metals, natural rubber, leather, and organic materials like glycols. The acidic corrosive hydrolysis products may react with metals, such as Al, Pb, and Fe, to give off hydrogen gas, a potential fire and explosive hazard. 

Polyethylene-based membranes are manufactured for use in hazardous waste landfills, lagoons, and similar applications. Two of these products have been tested to determine their effectiveness as barriers against radon diffusion. (In most cases, diffusive flow is considered of little or no significance as a mechanism of radon entry compared with convective flow). A 20-mil high-density polyethylene tested 99.9% effective in blocking radon diffusion under neutral pressure conditions. A 30-mil low-density polyethylene tested 98% effective in blocking radon diffusion under neutral pressure conditions.
