Contraindications to the use of adrenal steroids for suppressing inflammation are all relative, depending on the advantage to be expected. They should be used only for serious reasons if the patient has diabetes, a history of mental disorder or peptic ulcer, epilepsy, tuberculosis, hypertension or heart failure. The presence of any infection demands that effective chemotherapy be begun before the steroid, but there are exceptions (some viral infections, see above). Topical corticosteroid applied to an inflamed eye (with the very best of intention) can be disastrous if the inflammation is due to herpes virus. [Pg.670]

In the area of classical antimetabolites, a host of highly active new nucleosides have been found that show promise in the chemotherapy of cancer and viral diseases. Classical antimetabolites appear to have a virtual monopoly in the field of antiviral agents. After the discovery of the first effective drugs against, the Herpes virus 28b, c 25), a new breakthrough may have been... [Pg.94]

Another example of molecular modification is the synthetic nucleoside adenosine arabinoside (1-23). This compound has a pronounced antiviral activity against herpes virus and is therefore widely used in modern chemotherapy. [Pg.9]

Cannahinoids are usually well tolerated, and do not produce the generalized toxic effects of conventional chemotherapies . Anti-ulcer activity. Petroleum ether extract of the dried aerial parts, administered intra-peritoneally to male rats, was active k Antiviral activity. Hot water extract of the dried fruit, in veto cell culture at a concentration of 0.5 mg/mL, was inactive on herpes simplex 1 virus, measles virus, and poliovirus... [Pg.46]

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) is a member of the Herpesviridae family. HSV infection is endemic in the population. The primary symptom of infection is recurrent fever blisters. On occasion, infection can lead to more serious symptoms such as encephalitis and retinitis. In particular, immunocompromised patients, such as those undergoing chemotherapy treatments or receiving organ transplants, and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) victims are at particular risk of developing life-threatening complications due to reactivation of latent infections. [Pg.427]

Ocular antiviral chemotherapy in the horse is adapted from that used in herpes simplex virus (HSV) and varicella zoster keratitis in humans. The agents used are nucleotide analogs capable of inhibiting viral replication by competitive inhibition of the uptake of the nucleotide into the viral genome. These agents are virustatic and require an intact immune system to suppress or eliminate the virus from the eye. They probably do not eradicate any latent infection. The antiviral drugs available currently do not penetrate intact comeal epithelium and are poorly disseminated within the comeal stroma. The availability of these dmgs will vary in different countries and some may only be obtained from hospital pharmacies. [Pg.233]

Most antiviral agents are nucleotide antimetabolites similar in structure to the nucleotide antimetabolites used in cancer chemotherapy. The viruses that lend themselves to drug therapy are those with complicated genomes. The herpes simplex virus has over 120 genes making it likely that there are unique enzymes, such as the viral thymidine kinase, required for... [Pg.15]
